ATLANTA -- NFL owners have unanimously approved a new national anthem policy that requires players to stand if they are on the field during the performance but gives them the option to remain in the locker room if they prefer, it was announced Wednesday.

The policy subjects teams to a fine if a player or any other team personnel do not show respect for the anthem. That includes any attempt to sit or kneel, as dozens of players have done during the past two seasons. Those teams will also have the option to fine any team personnel, including players, for the infraction.

"We want people to be respectful of the national anthem," commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We want people to stand -- that's all personnel -- and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices."

All 32 owners approved the policy, which will be part of the NFL's game operations manual and thus not subject to collective bargaining. The NFL Players Association said in a statement that it will review the policy and "challenge any aspect" that is inconsistent with the CBA.

Personally I think it's a dumb move on the NFL's part. If the players want to take a knee in protest, let them; it doesn't mean the cameras and announcers have to make it their focus. If everybody else didn't make a big deal about it, it probably would have come and gone in a couple of weeks......and Kapernick would still be unemployed.

Agreed. The protests were hurting the NFL and tbh they didn't even need to compromise given the fact that they are an employer.

Forced patriotism. That's not a recipe for disaster?

They don't have to come on the field at all, that's good enough for me. You can elect not to participate.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling the NFL will lose a lot more money for this decision than they would've if they continued to let those that took a knee do it and continue to say it does not represent the NFL's views etc. Whether you agree with it or not they picked a side. It's not a good financial decision IMO.

They're forced to chose between two options.

At least they are given an option. They didn't have to be given any.... remember they are at work.

Yeah, forced allegiance is not patriotic. This rule was made after the fact. A very low blow indeed. Initially the guy knelt instead of sitting to be more respectful. So much for that.

They are not being forced to choose between those two options. They can choose to still kneel and pay the potential fine. In other words “put their money where their mouth is”. Or they can do what most everyday folks could do and look for another job. Let’s remember, the players are nothing more than employees, albeit high paid employees.

Yet, the other players do not have to pay a fine for standing for their beliefs. It's forced patriotism no matter how much you look at it. But again, this whole protest was not to be unpatriotic, it was to call out an error in our social systems. It made y'alls heads explode. Talk about crybabies...

Who cares? The military started paying for this 'commercial' back in 2009. I pay to see a football game, not a military commercial.

Good point. I forgot it was a recruitment tool/advertisement.

A. I personally think they should leave it up to the owners on how their employees present themselves at work.

B. The media loves to focus on drama, don't pay attention to the players who take a knee, most fans don't give 2 shits on what they do outside of the footbal field, unless it's illegal. I know I don't.

C. The right to free speech is waved when you're at work. I mean I could go to work an curse everyone out, but should expect to be fired. No one should feel entitled unless they own their buisness. Then they have to face the customer backlash if they act like an asshat at work or home.

Good points JT. Let’s see how Starbucks new bathroom policy effects their business.

Football lost me when they started stopping games for commercials. I can play a round of golf in the amount of time it takes to watch a football game.
