Maryland High School Shooter Used Handgun Despite Not Being Old Enough to Buy One

As more information is revealed regarding the Tuesday morning shooting at Great Mills High School, police now say that the now-deceased suspect used a handgun despite not being old enough to legally possess or purchase one.

The Baltimore Sun reports suspect Austin Wyatt Rollins, who was 17 years-old, brought and used a 9mm Glock handgun to injure two students - and fire back at the school resource officer who engaged him  - before being shot and killed himself.

In addition to the law stating someone must be 21 years-old to buy a handgun, a "Maryland resident must possess a valid Handgun Qualification License before he/she may purchase, rent, or receive a handgun," according to state police.


Maryland further passed an "assault weapons" ban in 2013.
St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron detailed some of the events of Tuesday morning, noting that the resource officer pursued and engaged the suspect.

"When the shooting took place, our school resource officer, who was stationed inside the school, was alerted to the event and the shots being fired. He pursued the shooter, engaged the shooter. He fired a round at the shooter," Cameron said.

"The one male student went to St. Mary's hospital and is in stable condition. The female student was transported to shock trauma facility and is in critical condition," he added.
