Cool ...I read that. I also read an LA times piece with a different statistics.

The common factor in gun violence is the gun, more importantly, ready access to the gun.

Certainly we can take steps to make guns like the AR harder to get without interference with the second amendment.

Well of course the common factor in gun violence is the gun, but you aren't going to stop gun violence by going after the wrong guns. Hell, even for mass shootings, you are going after the wrong guns.

Edit: Obviously the AR can do more damage quicker, but even taking them out of the picture, we still have a huge problem.

A student opened fire this morning at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, Maryland. (Caveat — details on these things are always sketchy this early.) Fortunately, before he did more than wound two fellow students, including the female he was specifically targeting, the school resource officer fired back and stopped the threat, killing the assailant. Obviously, having an armed officer on campus saved lives today — but only because he was willing to respond, unlike the Parkland, Florida, deputy.

The shooting this morning was most likely a known specific victim and not an indiscriminate attack. No one is against armed police SROs.


Handguns are by far the biggest killer in terms of overall numbers, but handguns have a more legitimate role in self defense (IMHO) and will be harder to regulate beyond universal background checks.

The AR/AK pattern rifles are unlikely to be used for defense barring extreme natural disaster or breakdown of civil law enforcement. They are far too easy to get given their heightened potential lethality.

They are the "low hanging fruit" of potential gun control.

Also, school shooters often target people they know. There was even a case where a shooter didn't shoot on girl because she was nice to him before and instead killed the kid next to her. Just because it starts with someone they know, doesn't mean it ends there. Who knows what would have happened if a good guy with a gun hadnt taken the shooter out.
