Why does he keep bringing up mental health when he doesn't believe it himself? If you believe in something, you put resources toward it. If you don't believe in it, you take the resources away.

Guns must be the real issue.

Let's put this refrain under the microscope.

There is no mental health diagnosis or designation that recognizes the psychological need to arm yourself, seek out crowds and kill as many as you can. Mentally ill persons are more likely to be victimized than be aggressors. The least common denominator in most mass shootings is not a diagnosed mental illness, which is typically assumed after the fact, it's the reality of easily accessible, highly potent semiautomatic civilian versions of military rifles. The resources applied to mental health are a very good indication that most lawmakers don't see it as a problem or a priority. It's a refrain that says nothing but sounds like the beginning of a dialogue.
