When it comes right down to it water, food, and shelter are the three most important things for survival.  What happens when one of those three is no longer available?

If you haven't heard about Cape Town's water issues spend some time with the google machine.  It isn't too late for us to learn.

A list of 11 other cities which may have water issues in the not too distant future:

Don't you find it odd that these 100/300 year occurrences seem to be happening on a regular basis?

No, of course you don't, you are an idiot.

Is there some reason the tech being used in Tampa can't be used in these other coastal cities?

Tampa Bay literally has a seawater desalination facility that is a drought-proof and an alternative water supply providing 25 million gallons per day of drinking water to the region.

Well Cape Town's issue seems to be political rather than water shortage.

"If there was an imposition we would be working there right now. However, there is nothing that allows us to do so. The minister [Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane] gave Umgeni a directive saying, can you go to Cape Town and find solutions? And that is what we did."

Hlongwa said the terms and conditions include a guarantee from the City that it could supply electricity for a desalination plant. "The distribution of electricity is the mandate of the City. The City must reinforce they can supply electricity for the plant. Critically, the location of the plant needs to be within the proximity of their distribution network."

He added: "We have to manage our value chain as Umgeni Water as well. People in charge of reticulation are not seeing the benefits of us being there."

As much as I understand that we will probably be fighting actual wars over water in some parts of the world eventually, there really is NO excuse for coastal cities to run out of water. If they don't have water, it is their own fault for not being willing to do what it takes to leverage the tech to provide themselves with water (for whatever reason).

Costal cities can install solar and wind to generate electricity to run desal plants and make water, get with it.

I believe it's (desalination) energy intensive at the moment, but improving.

Yeah, but it is irrelevant when it comes to drinking water or not and dying. Well irrelevant for major cities.

You guys been snoozin?

Melbourne Water, yep right here in beautiful Brevard,

has been using reverse osmosis (desalination) for 20 years.

"The Joe Mullins Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant was put into operation in 1995 with a 6.5 MGD capacity and a 4.0 million gallon ground water storage tank. The R/O WTP's raw water supply is obtained from four Floridan Aquifer wells at approximately 650 to 850 feet underground. Each yields approximately 3.1 million gallons per day."

For the record, the deeper Floridan in our region has less total dissolved soilds (salinity) than the ocean by a factor of about 3 or 4.

That makes it a good bit easier (cheaper) to process than ocean water.

The aquifer wells at 650 and 850 feet are not salt water tom. Using R/O on raw seawater is energy intensive.

The government in SA is a mess, and I don't doubt that political and economic problems are contributory.

The take away is that this is a sign of things to come as the climate continues to change.

And we have problems much closer than Cape Town

Is the water rising in Miami, or is the land sinking?

Exactly what I said Rusty.

Saltwater is just that, water with "salts" i.e., dissolved solids.

It's a question of concentration, Total Dissolve Solids (TDS).

It's much cheaper and easier to work with lower TDS water (lower Floridan)

than higher TDS water (seawater).

R/O is separation of salts from water, so, desalination.

Sorry if the translation was garbled.
