President Trump's tweet just now that he couldn't support the Alexander-Murray deal - despite indicating yesterday that he would back it as a short-term solution - has one GOP aide chuckling this morning. It's just one sign of how very familiar this kind of abrupt course-reversal has become for folks on the Hill.
"It's all pretty at this normal at this point, isn't it? I wasn't surprised," the aide said, minutes after Trump put out his tweet. "He takes six positions on everything before noon." This conservative GOP Senate aide said if Trump were to come out in support of Alexander-Murray this afternoon, that would hardly be surprising. This aide's boss, a conservative senator, would have been unlikely to support Alexander-Murray. However, this particular senator had not yet even had a chance to reach out to the White House since the framework of the bill was announced yesterday to express their displeasure - that's how quickly Trump had changed his mind. "Alexander didn't get anything. It's just a straight up bailout of Obamacare and insurance companies. There's no meaningful added flexibility for states - not at all," was this aide's description of the Alexander-Murray proposal. ------------------------- Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system. In biology, such behavior of cells is called "cancer". |
