I feel for the parents, they can't let go, but should they really be allowed to torture their poor son?

Very sad, but what about the millions dying of war and starvation?

Even our prez trump, chimed in on this but haven't heard a peep from him about the famine in Africa.

As the article stated, early treatment could have made a difference--would you want a chance for your Son?

Here are the tradeoffs:

1. Excellent (though expensive and inefficient) healthcare for some. The rest can FOAD or face financial ruin.

2. Good healthcare for all (and excellent healthcare at a premium) for the well-off.

These are the choices. Making nitpicking arguments addresses nothing. Face the full problem.

People can afford what they can afford. Right now a lot of people only afford what they have through subsidies.

The voters want a market based system. Let us have a market based system.

Didn't we have a market based system before Obama?

OK, raise your hand if your healthcare costs didn't go up each year before the ACA!

I guess I'll discuss this with Scombrid.

Insurance plus healthcare is very highly structured market that prices out people that don't have career jobs or the self-employed. The system is not designed for pay-out-of-pocket now.

This anecdote has little to do with who pays.

The child had a very rare almost always fatal disease that was diagnosed pretty early. Contrary to what was published in crankit's seriously partisan source, it looks to me from my brief study of the matter there is little evidence that any earlier diagnosis treatment would have helped. I'm not going to try and outguess the Dr.s, I know what I don't know.

Sad story, even sadder that people are threatening the health workers with death over it.

This and other left-right issues really come down to a worldview of equality and community vs hierarchy and superiority (class, race, gender, sexual orientation). The first is better for overall quality of life for the most; the second is better for militarism, industrial might and imperialism.

It's hard to make an informed choice when you don't understand this.

Yep. No pay no play.

Doesn't mean you get to abuse the kids though by doing things that doctors determine to be medically unnecessary and harmful.

Could have made a difference?

I read up on this case a few days ago.

That "could" is vanishingly small to the point of non-existance.

Your source is being deliberately misleading in the facts of this case and the decision processes involved.

The doctors said it won't work and will be further torture. They have refused.

American private insurance would not pay for experimental treatment for this child.

A dying child is a pain I can't allow myself to imagine, it's too much for me.
