The ice shelf itself - which can be thought of as a kind of floating ledge jutting out from the edge of the continent - is resting on the surface of the ocean and wouldn't contribute to any sea-level rise by itself if it were to break off. But ice shelves generally serve as a kind of stopper at the edges of glaciers, stabilizing and containing all the ice behind them. When they break, they have the potential to unleash a flood of ice from the continent that can significantly contribute to rising sea levels.

There are very large areas of ice pack/shelf that is resting on the sea floor. IF they slip off into deeper water, , , , , Miami is gone, overnight. What would an overnight rise of 3 feet do to most of Florida?

We may get to see it. There is a chance things can change quickly. No guarantees

An "old" generalization was that an inch of rise results in the loss of 1000 feet inland from the shore.

With an (R) president, senate and congress, the arctic could become Strawberry Fields and it wouldn't faze them.

3 feet overnight? I'm starting to feel the threat.

The old generalization? About sums up the methodology of climate science these days.

3 feet overnight seems extremely unrealistic to me. Got any sources for that?

An old (2014) article about the Larsen B collapse with some good explanations

So we're going to get a big iceberg, huh? Cool. $20 bets that we don't get a 3' sea level rise before Jan. 1, 2018.

It's a death from a thousand cuts and we are about 500 cuts in. You will say the same thing on the first cut as you will on the 999th. Then on the 1000th, you say it was a natural event, unpredictable and unstoppable.

Nature will have her way with us if we continue as we are.

I don't bet.

Buttttttt...if I were a betting man I would put ANY amount of money on bets that we don't get a 3' sea level rise before Jan. 1, 2018.

As a matter of fact (IF I were a betting man) I would make that date Jan. 1, 2020.....and put at least a grand on it!

You guys are funny.

I'd bet 10 million on that if I had it.
Actually even if I didn't.
Because if that happened, money wouldn't have much meaning anymore.

The "overnight" raise was from an article that talked about certain, very large, and very thick ice sheets that rest on the sea floor, not dry land. The concern is that certain "warmer" sea water is intruding under the edges of the pack. The nominal state of the ice is that it has been "frozen" to the sea bed. The sea bed is frozen, but, the catch is that if it were not frozen, it being frozen muck, it would have the consistency of Indian River muck mixed with vaseline. The "3 feet" is not a "fact" although the article was very clear to say the the rise would be substantial and rapid.

The problem is that there is much, much, more ice above the water than below the surface. Fill a glass to the rim with water. Now, drop in a large ice cube. What happens? What amount of sea rise would result from an ice cube as big as Rhode Island and 1 kilometer thick (extra is in excess of what is already submerged). A 4000 cubic kilometer ice cube is pretty dang big.

You could do the calculation and demonstrate the small effect of an extra 4000km^3.

Or you could continue being a dick.

Well, okay, that will never stop.
