Back to diesel gens just for a moment -

The ones I've dealt with had a 4-5 day run capacity tank and,

they autostart and test run once a week,

and the tank gets topped off every 2nd month.

With that cycle, we had to start a fuel monitoring program 

that would add biocides (yes, oil grows bugs) and conditioners to the fuel at the refuel interval

to keep it clean enough to burn.

Propane does not have those conditions.

I don't know as much about small house size generators but 

suspect that if you want one that's auto/instant on, propane or diesel,

it will need to have a weekly (two weeks, monthly?) test run cycle as well.  

That said, I just keep a small (7.5kW) gas gen for my house that is correctly mothballed so no storage issues.

My old Suburban is the "strategic petroleum reserve" as it's 40 gal tank stores enough gas for some time.

In '04 I burned about 5 gal / day running a 8Kbtu window unit, refrig, and misc lights and stuff.

I hope we don't need it again...

Tom, thanks again for the data. It's hard to beat the convenience of a 500-gallon propane tank, although I was considering a used 4WD Ford Excursion diesel as my apocalypse vehicle and strategic petrol reserve for the VW, and possibly the generator.

Unfortunately, the cost of auto insurance, even for a beater backup vehicle, gets excessive when you have teen drivers at the house. I remember buying my old Suburban when gas was $1.75, and refilling all 44 gallons at $3.99.

Ironically, I don't trust myself to keep a smaller generator properly mothballed. Failed once already; just always too busy. My dad has a natural gas generator at his house, with an near-infinite feed of city gas. It auto-started weekly until the battery died. He got too busy to replace the battery until a few days before Hurricane Matthew, and as soon as he replaced it, discovered the gas valve on the city's side had gone bad. Of course, they couldn't replace it until after the hurricane.

I'm surprised more car engines don't get re-purposed to power generators. At a near idle, 50 HP load, those seem fairly economical to operate, and translate to about 37 KW. It was sad to see a perfectly good Chevy V-8 get destroyed in the Cash for Clunkers program.

Actually, the $2.11 has all to do with Obama's expansion of oil exploration and drilling....and OPEC's desire to kill off America's more expensive oil conversion methods.

Trump has yet to sign any meaningful legislation. If he has and you can show proof, please post it here.

Trump stuff will take effect somewhere around October, if he ever manages to do anything.
