I don't think learning English would require anyone to sacrifice their "culture." Canada is very multicultural yet as I posted require applicants for citizenship to speak English or French.
My wife has to renew her Green card Palm Beach every so many years. She's been told many times by the officers how much they appreciate getting her compared to the multitude of people who there and have to bring an interpreter with them because they cannot understand English enough to get through the process. ------------------------- Replace turf grass with native plants that don't need irrigation and synthetic fertilizers or chemicals that can go into our waterways and ocean |

I don't think they are "sacrificing" their culture when they learn English, they are enhancing it.
I just don't see the point in dictating it, other than trying to enforce some mythology of our "national identity". Of course it's easier for everybody if they do speak English or Spanish and I wouldn't go out of the way to accommodate every other language in the process either, but I see nothing wrong with them using an interpreter. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

A common language leads to a more cohesive society. If you don't speak English in America I think you might feel less a part of society and disenchanted. Disenchanted people vote for people like Trump.

But very few people stay in America long and don't learn English.
They come here to be Americans. They do learn it, or at least their children do. I doubt very many foreign language speakers voted for that lying sack of shit. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

I know a bunch of bilingual Hispanic guys that did, but their families came here legally so are more than a little biased.

I've net plenty of conservative Puerto Ricans who voted for the lying sack of shit.
Mostly fundamentalist "Christians" though, fed his sort of fear and hate from their "pastors" ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

Trump got a higher percentage of hispanic votes than the last "lying sack of shit" GOP candidate, Romney. He also almost did as well as the "lying sack of shit" GOP candidate before that, McCain. On a side note, it is funny how Republicans are the sole "lying sacks of shit," especially since the last two dem presidents were were handed a lie of the year award and a perjury conviction. ------------------------- I :heart; Q |

It might shock some people, but the biggest supporters I know for securing our borders are children of legal Mexican immigrants, specifically a couple of people I served with. The general consensus with them is that their families went through so much time and effort to come here legally and gain citizenship that they view the people who don't as less than them for circumventing the rules. They feel it is a slap in the face for what their parent accomplished and hate being given a bad name because of them.

I wouldn't, didn't use the term "lying sack of shit" for any President than this one because they were not such. Trump is.
Romney and McCain might have been wrong about a lot of stuff but they didn't constantly pathologically lie like Trump indisputably does. I certainly opposed both on policy and even character, but had a modicum of respect for them as people. But Trump is way way different. He lies about 50% of the time, and then doubles down when called on it. Plus he is a shit of a human being. Obama's misstatement about the ACA, and Bills attempt to cover his own ass at that BJ witch hunt pale in comparison and you fucking know it. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

We don't have a national language because one was never agreed upon. We have a de facto national language, but that can change. Furthermore, our lack of language skills here is pathetic. Q: What do you call a person who speaks two languages? A: Bilingual. Q: What do you call a person who speaks three languages? A: Tri-lingual. Q: What do you call a person who speaks one language? A: American. ------------------------- GOP: Gaslight Obstruct Project |
