What in the hell does South Florida have to do with the keys? All of the water that is/was supposed to flow from the lake okeechobee region all the way down to the keys was removed...or should I say...MOST OF IT! our natural water shed was trashed! ------------------------- The REAL truth is....both of the forum idiots are OWNED. -BOTH of them have no clue who their owner is. -They are both card carrying narcissists. ^These are PROVED facts. |

That is the same as sitting on the beach and hour after low tide and asserting that because each wave doesn't wash incrementally higher up the beach than the previous that the tide is in fact not going to come in. When temporal and spatial variations in sea surface height are averaged through time, the average sea level is rising. The mean rise across the keys in the 20th century was something on the order of 300mm. That has differing effects in different places depending on different starting elevations. No matter what you attempt to bill shit.....once rizen water has infiltrated an area...it isn't leaving! once water rises...its not receding.....so your 'global warming' crap states. are you trying to claim that melted glacial water mysteriously goes away after a period of time.... we aren't talking about tides...we are talking about rising water and flooded areas. if the water rose to flood an area....it's not going to recede...it's ....according to your 'data' only going to get MORE flooded over time. While that has royally screwed up the hydrology of the lowermost peninsula and the uppermost keys... That flow alteration isn't the cause of upslope migration of mangroves and pines in the lower and middle keys. ------------------------- ... |

Less fresh water lets saltwater infiltrate the land...eroding it and altering it.
Salt is a corrosive! It eats everything. Coquina rock does NOT like it! The water from the glades does not affect the sea surface height in Big Pine or Marathon or Key West or any of the small uninhabited keys down that way that are shrinking. Fresh water is a lot more corrosive to limestone than salt water. While we are on the topic of corrosive. What happens when you dissolve CO2 into water faster than biogeochemical processes remove it or buffer the acid that is created by it? ------------------------- ... |

When you remove the fresh water the saltwater moves in replacing it....that's how all the wells in south Florida keep getting trashed! Less fresh water in the Keys caused them to erode? Mayport, Key West, and Pensacola all have measured changes in sea surface height of about 10 inches from 1925 to 2000. The change in hydrology in the Everglades did not cause that. ------------------------- ... |

The Florida Keys, like the Bahamas, are a limestone platform. The Keys, typical of the US, have very long tidal gauge records (that was high tech of the 1850s or so; San Diego had the first on the Pacific coast, and their tide gauge was the first scientific instrument to detect an earthquake, by picking up a small tsunami from Japan. The tide gauges tell what's happened up till now quite accurately. The future is of course a bit more speculative, but nevertheless predictable. |
