"In an otherwise unremarkable day last week--November 11, 2015 (noted mainly for being Veterans Day in the U.S.)--a crucial milestone in global climate was quietly transcended. The daily average concentration of carbon dioxide in the air that day at Hawaii's Mauna Loa Observatory was 399.68 parts per million. On November 12 it rose to 401.64 ppm, and it's quite possible that we'll never see another day in our lives with the daily Mauna Loa CO2 reading below 400 ppm. Greenhouse gases have been building in our atmosphere for more than a century, so this news doesn't come as a shock so much as a reminder of what our continued use of fossil fuels is doing to the atmosphere."

A manmade milestone in global climate was quietly transcended. The daily average concentration of carbon dioxide in the air rose to 401.64 ppm, and it's quite possible that we'll never see another day in our lives with the daily Mauna Loa CO2 reading below 400 ppm. Greenhouse gases have been building in our atmosphere for more than a century, so this news doesn't come as a shock. Scientists quickly set another milestone at 500ppm. We wait with bated breath for that milestone to be reached, more news to come later this century...>>

I would like to create a giant travelling ostrich monument on Mauna Loa stating: "11/11/2015 400 parts per million or Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Its all confusing, I am not a scientist but I feel like any direction toward lowering or stopping this trend is anti-business, impossible and best left to people who haven't even been born yet." Every election year, GOP should be photographed restating their position and maintaining their consistent response. They should be photographed with dates and those photos should be displayed at prominent places around the country, like former glaciers, or Miami where the high tide and rising sea levels can lap at the ostrich's legs. Its a chance for the younger generation to learn what happens when powerful people claim they didn't know just because they didn't want to know.

If this is so important to you, pay to have your ostrich made and transported around.

Now, as far as your point, global warming is either happening or it isn't. Either way there is nothing we can do about it. Therefore, it makes no sense to spend trillions of dollars for nothing.

We can stop deluding ourselves.  THAT would be a milestone.

Makes me feel bad that I want to open a brewery. All that yeast creating CO2. But then again the beer I make will help ease the stress of a planet that will become less inhabitable. But you will have to come to the rain forest in Costa Rica.

Until you get that up and running, there is always the Christmas Tab, which isn't far off now.

A weird part of my brain hurts and wants to reduce that fraction to 4 parts per thousand.

Greenhouse gases have been building in our atmosphere for more than a century

Since the industrial revolution.

Did you guys even have history when you were in school?

For a century and we still can't get anyone to take it seriously.  That'll take another century after which...uh...nothing.

Yep, it took us some time to start pumping out the really good carcinogens and o2 pollutants.

Now we have reached the record ppm.

Yea us!
