Hate Crimes statute does not apply in this civil case. Hopefully the public works department gets torn apart. Civil suit for wrongful termination and racial discrimination is the correct course of action. ------------------------- ... |

Seem there were plenty of witnesses, it should be an easy win for Lyons.

Plaintiff's lawyers was quotes as saying that he was surpirsed that such discrimination could occur at that level of government. He must not be familiar with how things work in the maintanence divisions of many local governments, big and small. Or maintenance crews at some companies. You get some hiring manager that treats it as his feifdom. Nepotism is rampant. Employees often "borrow" equipment for their own use. You come in as an outsider and you better keep your head down or else. If you start making noise about the sloth or the equipment disappearage and you are going to get harrassed if not flat forced out.

I'm not sure where you see a "hate crime" in wrongful termination, but he is protected by the same laws that protect us all in terms of racial discrimination in the workplace.
