A drinking buddy of mine told me about his son, a lifer Ranger type, , , he fully intended to do his 20+. But his last tour (3rd) in Afghanistan changed his mind. He was so upset, that he told his father that he was going to bitch slap whom ever was on the other end of that com link, , , ,.

They were out on foot patrol going through a small village/town when they started taking fire; machine gun and RPG. Multiple wounded and one KIA. He was on the comm asking for some fire support and was told to "stand down" (even though they were pinned down to begin with). It seems that there was a report that there could have been women and children in the building that the hostile fire was coming from. The "Higher Ups" told him to cease and pull back. He told his father that he wished he had been back in the good-old-days; he would have called in nape for the whole fooking village.

Welcome to guerrilla warfare. Same deal as the 1960's. You'd think our strategies and tactics would have evolved by now.

Our morale gets warn down this way. I'd pull out, wait for the enemy to establish something - headquarters, infrastructure, something, then destroy specific targets with overwhelming force and get the hell out.

Going on foot patrols in civilian areas with invisible enemies? No win situation.
