I have stayed away from politics for quite a while, and only pick up bits and pieces from the news headlines, so I was surprised to find myself interested in this morning's headlines about Ted Cruz announcing his run for President in 2016. Perhaps it was because he made the announcement at Liberty University?

In any case, not knowing anything about the guy, I did a bit of research and found that he seems to be the kind of guy that would get my vote.

I'm interested to know, from both sides of the fence, what people like and dislike about him the most...also what people feel would make him qualified (or not) to be our next President.

However, I doubt he will be hiding his college transcripts

He graduated at the top of his class from Harvard Law and was well known for his skills on the debate team.

Whether he wins or loses, I am glad he is throwing his hat in the ring. In a debate setting, I could see him driving Hillary to the edge, where she would be forced to do exactly what the Democrats are most scared of. She might flip out and be herself.

He would be my first choice. He is my first choice because he is a conservative man of priinciple and his principles arise from the Constitution.

Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz, the first hispanic/Cuban American Senator in the state of Texas. Was high school Valedictorian, graduated cum laude from Princeton and magna cum laude from Harvard law. Referred to as "off the charts brilliant" by his professors at Harvard, he is already being labeled by the dems as to stupid to even run for the office of President. Are they afraid, or just racist???

My best friend is Canadian.

Great bunch of people who winter down here.

It's amazing how well they do considering Canada is basically a socialist country.

Seems he has a hard time getting away with lying.

Politifact is worthless for determining the truth of something. The first three statements, which are called mostly false, are absolutely true. I guess the folks at Politifact assume - and probably rightly - that the type of people who read their tripe, won't search the internet to get the truth.

so, I wonder what are his opinions on islam sunni extremists and yemen?  If he announced, I suppose he should hit the trail runnning?  Build up a good base before the expected large amount of candidates starts to flow.  There is an announced caliphate, so true Christians should be pretty charged up.  I'd be interested in how he walks the line on the first amendment or handles the persecutions of potential extremists in the US. I don't see the patriot act going away any time soon.

He's pretty much wrong on everything.
A lot of you will like that.

The consesus is that Cruz is a smart guy.

His academic credentials affirm this.

He's a flat out ultra-conservative but too smart a guy to believe the earth is not heating up.

He's pandering to Texas big oil interests.

Cruz is the perfect candidate for the republican party, I've been pushing him for years.

It will be a republican injustice if he doesn't make it to the general election.

I will be doing my part; keep and eye out for signs and stickers.

That's a pretty broad statement...can you name a few and explain why?

He's a Dominionist End-Timer. I guess if you agree with that philosophy then he should be your guy.

I don't typically factor private religious belief into the selection process for candidates. But that particular belief is not private but is really a political philosophy.

He seems to hide that from his main campaign page.

But there's plenty of video and transcripts of his father and his associates preaching on the topic as well as Ted getting together with such prominent Dominionists as the pseudo-historian David Barton. Maybe Cruz could have Barton as secretary of education.

Folks made a big deal about Obama and Jeremiah Wright. Well, maybe folks ought to look into what Cruz's dad preaches in his mega-ministry along side Benny Hinn's ex-wife if that sort of thing is important.

^^ Finally.  An explanation for his abject lunacy.

It only figures.

Has his "dominionist end-timer" philosophy translated into the public space and been reflected in his public work as far as you can tell?

Having been a member of Congress, in Texas government, and in private law practice with numerous cases argued even before the Supreme Court, I would guess this leaning would be evident by now. Have you seen it?

Even if I don't agree with the "dominionist" philosophy, that's not enough to keep me from voting for him if the body of his public work has been sound and respectable.

The primaries will come down to how the conservatives split their vote. Cruz, IMO, is the best of the bunch. Yet he (and other conservatives) could lose to Bush due to vote splitting. That is what Bush is counting on.

I was talking to my dad last night and he said he likes Cruz, but he likes Scott Walker even better. Again...having intentionally avoided politics for quite a while, I only remember some big hubbub a couple of years ago in Wisconsin with him, but my dad said he took on the unions as an "R" in a blue state and won.

What are Walker's chances if he decides to enter the fray?

And if Walker and Cruz were to team up somehow, would it make more sense with Cruz as VP or Walker as VP...or is something like this too unlikely at all?
