I say we skip building any more than a few of these lovely toys and spend the money instead on those skunkworks guys who say they can make a fusion reactor that will fit in a pickup truck

Great idea. Then China can sail it's fleet into Long Beach and take it. It is this kind of insane thinking that resulted in the progs getting their butts kicked yesterday.

Wow!! Awesome pics!!!

There's not a lot that gives an adrenaline rush like paddling out on a big day and dropping in on a gnarly one, but the pic you posted above of the F35 on approach to the carrier gives me the same kind of impression...must be pretty exciting and a bit intense!

These are not my pics.. Nor am I a test pilot or even in the navy.

DOD publishes them. I just poached the links from another forum cause they are cool.

Nimitz Class data from Wikipedia:

The Nimitz-class carriers have an overall length of 1,092 ft (333 m) and a full-load displacement of about 100,000 - 104,000 long tons (102,000 - 106,000 metric tons).[5] They have a beam at the waterline of 135 ft (41 m), and the maximum width of their flight decks is 251 ft 10 in to 257 ft 3 in (77.76 m to 78.41 m) (depending on the variant). The ships' companies can number up to 3,200, not including an air wing of 2,480.

When we have fusion powered aircraft the Chinese won't fuck with us.

Cool as the F-35 is, there are some real operational issues that limit its intended role(s).  Sometimes, better is the enemy of good enough.

It will never live up to its namesake:

... Lockheed's 'retort' to the blog.

Using a test platform makes sense - to a degree - in their defense.

Also, the Marines are using the F-35 as a replacement for the AV-B+ model, and that plane is a dog fight dud.

Don't we already outspend China on military toys?

Actually, don't we outspend China and the next nine largest countries on military toys?

Even then.
Sensor data quality and weapons range should make dog fighting mostly obsolete.
The loser in most modern engagements is dead long before he gets close enough.
