You bet your ass property taxes will go up in the name of climate change.
The earth has been warming since the last ice age.
Climate changes every year with the seasons, too.

Wife said it was a good meeting except for the ditto heads. I understand the police chief had to remind them that whether or not you beleive in it, water was up to the back door of the fire house Monday.

Think of it this way... you have immediate-term events (daily weather), seasonal events (weather pattern), and long-term events/trends (e.g., greenhouse gas accumulation, etc...)

During a hurricane, a storm surge at high tide is worse than the identical surge at low tide, and worse yet during a spring tide.

The thing is, the seasonal and short-term events can be more disastrous if an unfavorable long-term trend (e.g., sea level rise) has occurred. There is simply less room for margin.

With that said, certain areas of the beachside communities are at more risk than others.

A long-term look at what facilities, infrastructure, and living areas may be impacted is a wise, logical step; some of them might be relocatable, some protectable, and some abandoned.

But there will definitely be a monetary impact if those steps are needed. Waterfront tax revenue may be lost, roads and utility routing may be impacted, etc...

The subjects of dune restoration and coastal armoring, which directly affect local beachgoers' quality of life, will come up again and again and again...

Given the decisions that will have to be made, it's better to put some forethought into it (along with policies, if appropriate) to plan for the contingencies, rather than deal with it chaotically at the last minute if stuff hits the fan.

The city should be commended for taking on this exercise, and residents should give deep thought as to how they would like the issues handled, and make their wishes known to their representatives on city boards and government when there is time to do something about it.

Its so inconvenient that the climate change alarmist had to drop the "increase in major Hurricane activity" scare. All the attention now is directed at "sea level rise". It takes a long time to have that one disproved.

I guess we will just have to pay.

I think the powers that be should put their money where their mouth is, no new construction east of A1A.

I totally agree with no NEW construction. But you have to start now with looking at what can be done regarding property rights at the state level (property already owned with rights to build), people's right to rebuild after a disaster, etc.

It takes YEARS to get through all the legal technicalities of issues like that. But ya gotta start sometime. This city initiative presents a good opportunity to do so.

Note: By construction, I assume you mean things like buildings, not beach parks and ramp enhancements?

I am all for beach access, not the type Satellite bch spends money on. example..Buc beach, spend a pile of money to improve the access when all they really did was put a roof over a picnic table added a sulfur water shower and decreased the parking by about 40%. Have you ever tried to get out of there after you pull in and find no place to park? Generaly I'm for spending on public access and against bailing out people who build knowing they will be bailed out.

I've always thought about sea level rise and risk of surge in terms of the beachfront, but I learned from the meeting that the back side of the island will be the first to be under water.

Maybe Lansing Island will build their own dikes.

I was pleased that the city is being proactive and opening the discussion. The sea is slowly rising whether you believe in it or not, better to talk strategy now than later.

They should allow more construction east of A1A. That would lower the taxes for the rest of us.
