Washington Post Gives Obama 2 Pinocchios On 77¢ Gender Pay Gap Lie, But He Should Have Gotten Many More!

The 'Fact Checker' at the Washington Post isn't terribly objective, which is why it only gave two "pinocchios" (a rating for how bad a lie is) to the Obama administration for it's perpetual hoisting upon the American public of the 77¢ gender pay gap. Even so, it's much more honest than many other liberal outlets who perpetuate the misleading claim:

Few experts dispute that there is a wage gap, but differences in the life choices of men and women - such as women tending to leave the workforce when they have children - make it difficult to make simple comparisons.

...Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis surveyed economic literature and concluded that "research suggests that the actual gender wage gap (when female workers are compared with male workers who have similar characteristics) is much lower than the raw wage gap." They cited one survey, prepared in 2009 for the Labor Department, which concluded that when such differences are accounted for, much of the hourly wage gap dwindled, to about 5 cents on the dollar.

"This study leads to the unambiguous conclusion that the differences in the compensation of men and women are the result of a multitude of factors and that the raw wage gap should not be used as the basis to justify corrective action. Indeed, there may be nothing to correct," the report for the Labor Department said. "The differences in raw wages may be almost entirely the result of the individual choices being made by both male and female workers."

What choices are these? Well, women often take lower paying jobs because they're less dangerous, while men get paid extra for taking the greater risk. That has nothing to do with "gender discrimination" and nothing Democrats can legislate will change it. Women also take time off to have children, or leave the job force altogether to raise their families. This would be completely overlooked in the misleading 77¢ statistic, which shrinks drastically when these differences are taken into consideration.

While the Washington Post only gave Obama two "pinocchios," we at the Independent Journal Review give him a billion pinocchios, five million Nancy Pelosis, and a bajillion Harry Reids.

Women could not vote in this country until less than 100 years ago, they are under represented in business (check the head of HR, it may be a woman), under represented in politics, and we've never had a woman President (soon to change).

Women do not get equal treatment yet.  That is a given.

It is working fine. Well ... not in the White House, I guess. Obama's war on women there has been very successful.

The tools you refer to are not what you think. Basically, the proposed law is a hand out to trial lawyers. All it does is to change the burden of proof required to prove discriminatory pay in trial. Instead of a plaintiff having to prove that she was discriminated against, the employer would have to prove that it wasn't discriminaotry. Enactment of that law would lead to an explosion of baseless litigation. Now, while that would be good for me as a lawyer, it won't be good for anyone else. It would be particularly bad for women because many employers would be less likely to hire women due to concerns about having to spend money fighting frivolous lawsuits.
