The Social security tax was being taken out of my check until 2010, then was lowered 2% as part of a stimulus. Now in 2013 the stimulus is over and it has returned to the previous levels.

1. Depreciation -
a. Bonus Depreciation - 50% write off on all New/Original Use Equipment was set to Expire
as of 12-31-2012. This has been extended through 12-31-2013.
b. Section 179 - BIG CHANGE!! 2012 limit was set to be $139,000 with a phase-out if you
bought over $500,000 in equipment. This bill goes back to 2012 and raised this limit to
$500,000 and bumped the phase-out threshold up to 2 million.
i. EVERYONE we taxed planned with this year should take a look at this change - If
you bought over $139,000 in new equipment in 2012 we may want to touch
base ASAP to discuss how this can/will affect you!!
2. Capital Gains - Tax Rate stays at 15% for individuals with less than $400,000/$450,000marrieds.
Over that level rates jump to 20%.
a. Keep in mind - the 3.8% surtax under ObamaCare is still in effect - If you have over
$200,000/$250,000 of income you need to add 3.8% to these rates.
3. AMT Relief - Increased levels to $50,600 single and $78,750 married couples - Some people will
still get hit with AMT, but it shouldn't hit near as many now.
4. Estate Tax - $5 Million Exemption - Rate increased to 40% - Portability between spouses is
maintained. This is not an extender - Good News - This was made permanent law.
5. Phase outs - The phase outs of Itemized Deductions & Personal Exemptions come back into play
for Individuals making $250,000 and marrieds making $300,000.
6. Social Security - The 2013 Wage Base is $113,700. The Rate Returns to 6.2% for the Employee
Share, stays at 6.2% for the Employer, and Returns to 15.3% for Self-Employed.
7. Medicare - No change here on this bill - but Remember - ObamaCare legislation adds an extra
0.9% on Medicare wages/earnings in excess of $200,000.
These are the major effects of the bill - We will continue to update this page and our clients as
