Americans Will Work More than 6 Months to Pay Cost of Gov't in 2012

(CNSNews.com)This year, Americans have to work until July 15 to pay for the burden of government, more than six months.

In a new report,  Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) has calculated that Americans will spend a total of 197 days toiling to pay for the cost of government.

"Cost of Government Day is the date of the calendar year on which the average American worker has earned enough gross income to pay off his or her share of the spending and regulatory burden imposed by government at the federal, state and local levels," reads the report.

The report, Cost of Government Day, shows that Americans will work 88 days to pay for federal spending; 40 days for state and local spending; and 69 days for total regulatory costs.

"From a different perspective, the cost of government makes up 54.0 percent of annual gross domestic product (GDP)," reads the report. "What's more, the largest tax hike in the nation's history is scheduled to take place at the end of 2012 unless Congress acts to protect taxpayers. If this tax increase is allowed to hit, COGD [Cost of Government Day] could permanently be pushed back into August and beyond."

Do you know what percentage of our GDP the war in Afghanistan is costing us? I don't, but I'd be curious to find out. Also, what percentage of the GDP do the domestic entitlement programs cost us?

I'm amazed that those figures aren't @ your fingertips. the real drag is that you must add all of these future costs that you can only forecast. very expensive. question: why didn't Bush pursue a "war bond" program or address long - term costs? if I recall, the official response was 'go to the mall".

% 365  days in a year =  $71.33

 $71.33* 197 days they quoted = $14052

 

Hmmm anybody know if that number is what they quote for each person's share???

 

Note they said average but the value I used for income ( all I could find ) was median which of course can be very diffrent, especailly if skewed distrubution...

Safe borders, safe food, safe water, safe roads, safe drugs, safe flights, strongest military in the world, safety net for the elderly, medical safety net for the elderly and safety nets for the mentally and physically challenged are a burden?

The burden is having the working class citizens providing Free food, free housing, free medical, free phones, to those who are not working but who could work if the President put as much effort into job creation policies that he does into buying votes of the poor by giving them a free ride..

The guvments job is not to make us safe from our own decisions but to keep us free so we can make our own decisions...

We already work 6 ++ months to pay for all the taxes Fed, state and local.  I guess we can expect to work almost 9 months now.  Family of 4, 2016, minimum coverage $12,500.00.

Are you saying that they are NOT a tax burden? That we are NOT already paying for that? That we have NOT paid for that for the last 50 years and that the percent of needy people in our country has not INCREASED in the 50 years we have been carrying that burden???

WE as a people do not have a Guvment that was established to make us SAFE and to give us FREE things...

We have a Guvment established for Life, Liberty (FREEDOM) and the (freedom) to pursue happiness...

You are willing to give up freedom for safety, thats what you believe the Guvment should provide, I believe the Guvment is there to insure our freedoms and that includes a strong military which also as a side value provides safety...
