DuMau is back to the world and away from the meatgrinder forever.  I will now be protecting the world via the Coast Guard.  When you see a GC C-130 in the air, wave, cause it's one of my planes that I support.

But my main question is:  due to circumstances I am now facing total knee replacement on both my knees next week.  They are doing an Accufit type replacement.  But does anyone out there know or have experience on whether or not one can surf again after such surgery.  The Dr was a bit dicey when I asked him this.  Anyone???

My brer in law got an ankle replacement last year.  Has been antibiotics ever since.  I've read that some replacements aren'tbeing sanitized properly and installed with caustic residue.  My knees are getting worse by the year.  enough so that I had to give up surfing cold (60 and below)water.  If I had some gubmint issued health care, I'd look into getting them repaired.  Good luck.  Do research on your replacemnts somewhere other than here.

I can't answer on knees except to say they are supposed to be much more difficult to rehab from than hips. I had my hip done 4 years ago next week and I love it. As I told my doc, "You gave me my life back." I have to take an antibiotic prior to any dental procedure (including cleaning), but nothing else. Rehab was relatively easy, much easier than I expected. I am facing another one in the next year or so, and I won't wait as long for this one. I didn't realize how much agony I was in until it was gone. Now, I look back and wonder, "How was I able to put up with the agony for the last 10 years." Gary Paul saw me one time and said, "Do it, do it now!" and he was right. (He has one, too.) If you are in a lot of pain and eating painkillers on a routine basis, you need one.

Thanks guys.  Just looking for feed back.  Yep Vicodin is my friend.  How does that work w/the dentist.  They prescribe antibiotics prior to the visit?  Been putting this off for years but the pain was so damn bad, unable to walk etc; I was finally out of options at 55 yrs old.

Your doctor gives you a prescription each year (for about 30 tabs) and you take four 1/2 hr before a dental appt. Not a big deal. I did mine at 53. It had gotten so bad, I was dragging my leg behind me. I couldn't walk more than about 200 yds without agony. It affected my outlook in ways that I can only see in hindsight. Depression, from the situation and also as a side effect of the painkillers, was very real. I am not saying the rehab was easy, but it was easier than I imagined it would be. Cutting an 11 inch gash, moving all the butt muscles away, and yanking the ball out of the socket just seemed like it would be very traumatic. But, I was walking (with a walker) the next day, with a cane at 3 weeks and free at 6 weeks. I felt like I could surf again after about 2 months, but had to wait 6 months for the bone to grow into the implant. (But, I went at 5 months - I couldn't stand it anymore after watching, from the dune, the best summer in memory. 2008 had a swell in May, one in June, two in July and three in August. So, I went back on Labor Day weekend, which was also a good swell.)

further down the leg you go, the more susceptible to infection. I cut my foot on pre Gloria swell, ended up with gangrene, and had to have a muscle and artery removed, It was mostly infected due to Dr sewing me up with sand and sea monkeys in the wound.

There's truth to the "further down the leg" business.  I got banged on the ankle by a piece of wood in the surf, didn't think anything about it.  Took months for foot swelling to go down.  Doc told me it was a bone bruise.

I have good knees, but one was store and stiff for months.  Luckily, it wasn't a "major" problem.
