TALLAHASSEE -- Florida lawmakers approved a plan to allow random drug tests for state employees Friday.

Controversy over the bill intensified last week when lawmakers voted down an amendment that would have required the governor and elected officials to be drug tested.

"It was found to be unconstitutional to drug test elected officials because it prevents us, as citizens, from having that First Amendment right," Smith said last month.

Good. You a gov't bureaucrat, 3rdworld? Looks like your jig is about up. But, there are worse things than having to live under a bridge.

1. My private life is none of your business, nor the government's.

2. Wrongfully accusing me of drug use in a public forum is not protected speech, so maybe you should watch yourself.

3. I'm confident the courts find this law to be unconstitutional, again, since there is precedent case law.

So you are a gov't bureaucrat. Well, your days of raping the Florida working man are drawing to a close.

And, you will not be able to make up for your lost income by suing me for slander. I'd suggest that the better course would be to call up the Clown for your easy money.

Lame excuse for why the legislature and gov are exempted from their own ideas.

Tpap,

As a matter of fact, I do not work for the state and there is a Florida statute that addresses anonymous internet defamation.

You'd have to prove that I defamed you, which I didn't. You progs have gotten a little sensitive lately.

Don't worry too much. I've no interest in your money or investments. I'll just ask the jury for the vett. My old man has a thing for them.

Why didn't you say so in the first place. I was thinking of getting rid of that personal global warming machine anyway. Couldn't sleep at night knowing that I was wiping out the planet.

Government workers shouldn't have the same rules as the private sector? Go try to get a job with a major employer with out a drug test!

It's an unreasonable search either way, other than when a drunk or drugged worker could put others at risk for harm, so both private sector and government random testing is a violation of civil rights. The difference is that the US Constitution expressly prohibits government searches.

Drug tests at start of employment are a standard insult these days.
But random tests of employees are a bit beyond.

Few companies without a government mandate feel the need to abuse their employees in this way.

"A 2006 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that 84 percent of employers required new hires to pass drug screenings, and 39 percent randomly tested employees after they were hired. "

So, I was wrong, it's gotten a lot worse.
We are all less free, by consent.

Insurance companies claim it increases workplace safety, reduces cost of claims.

That's a major reason so many private employers who offer insurance require it.

It might be a driver behind the state (a huge employer and insurance provider) mandate as well.

Decouple insurance from employment, and things might change a bit.

Keeping insurance coupled to employment is a great way to control people.
