Well my wife was after me to try an SUP. I rented one for her from Ocean Sports World, and she's in love.

It didn't do that much for me (was fun, but yeah), but she would like to get one.

NSP seems to make cheap ones, any good?

She won't be riding waves or anything fancy, just paddling her way around enjoying the scenery. I'm thinking something nice and buoyant, but not excessively hard to carry.

Any recommendations guys?

Talk to Roy at OSW, Tom Neilson or Girard Middleton and SoBe Surf. Several of the Starboards (Girdard) are wide and light.

I think it's a good idea to rent one the first few times, so you can get your "sea legs" and then you can more objectively tell the difference from one board vs. another. Also, start out in the 10'6"-11' length by 30-32" in width if you are a newbie. Today, I ride a 9'2" SUP by Tom Neilson, but I started on a 11'. Enjoy!

Not sure how tall she is, but I'm 5'2" and I regularly ride an ARK 10'6", but started on a 12'. Honestly, it's like surfing, where everyone wants something small and light to carry, but doesn't really work for regular use.
I got mine from Roy, and if your wife wants, she can borrow my board and paddle this week if she'd like since I've got knee ligament tears, and won't be doing much except sitting. Boo. PM me if she's interested.

Thanks for all the help, my wife's the proud new owner of a 10'4 NuWave. Now to find some flat water for her....

how much are they going for?  I've been thinking about getting one since it's been so flat for so long.  I had plans to get a SUP and a John boat and head out to the shipping channel to meet up with freighters, but didn't want to spend a ton.

Make sure of the bottom, lots of small oyster beds in the river, I paddle from the park in Grant and go to the islands near there.

My wife likes the ocean, she didn't even want to try it out in the dirty river water (Oars and Paddles).

They still have a few at 800 with leash, fins, and paddle at NuWave. But they said the new ones would be "wood grain" and cost like $50 more.
