Horrible news. He's a good man, great songwriter and band leader. Say a prayer he recovers.

R.I.P. Tom.

Met him privately way-back-in 1973.

The "Traveling Wilburys" are so very under rated.

This video fascinated me as a youngster. I'm pretty sure I taped it on my grandma's BetaMax.

Tom Petty's Mudcrutch opened almost every free show at UF in the early '70s (and were the house band at Dub's). They were not very good and were booed off the stage quite often. In about '79, after my (now) wife and I moved back here, Damn the Torpedoes came out and I absolutely loved it (still do). For a while, I was convinced that this had to be a different Tom Petty. I have really liked everything he has done since then (both with the Heartbreakers and others like Dylan, Stevie, Wilburys, etc), but, boy, Mudcrutch was pretty bad. I will miss his music. RIP

News of his death were greatly exaggerated yesterday afternoon, but it's been confirmed this morning.

We were up in St.Augustine for Jack Johnson when we heard this. In a little bar downtown, Stogies, we had an impromptu wake, complete with Irishmen, Guinness, and music. A local musician, whom I highly recommend (Sam Pacetti) did a tribute set, and it was just...awesome and weird at the same time. We started the evening thinking he was gone, found out about 1/3 of the way through that he was still hanging in, and then he actually passed during the end of the set. And Garcia, I didn't particularly love Mudcrutch (heresy, I know), but then I don't remember those concerts all that well, iykwim. Hearing the tightened up versions later on Tom Petty radio on Sirius I appreciated them much more.
