just inherited some vinyl from a family member. no record player. just looking for something basic that is decent quality and reliable. most of the stuff i've been looking at on amazon seems either kinda shotty or has too many extra features that might end up breaking on it.

yard sales > craigslist > 2nd hand or goodwill stores > yard sales. ......... repeat process til you find one. finding one at a decent price is hit and miss.

The budget USB turntables I looked at (under $120?) got mostly crappy reviews for reliability, sound quality, and software ease of use. Over $300 the reviews got better. I second Bob's suggestion on searching for used. I bought some used gear from Ken at Audiotronics (Melbourne) several years ago, and got a good deal.

Got a nice Technics 1300 for $40 a couple years back at Beachside Thrift.

Keep your eye on Craigslist.  Electronics section.  Does your amp have a phono input?

Tedco in Melbourne has some cartridges and needles if you need a replacement.  Needledoctor.com has upscale ones.

Let us know if you're going to get rid of albums cheap.

edit:  sent you a PM too

This guy in cocoa beach has 3 tables for $10 each.

How can you go wrong for ten bucks?

The pioneer PL-400 is a pretty nice direct drive turntable.  If it is in good working condition that is a good deal.

For the "record" ...

I have a Realistic LAB 395 turntable that I will sell...

...direct drive, with R47 EDT cartridge and a SHURE 5X stylus.

Not exactly sure of the year, but these were made from ~ '81 - '87.
....somewhere in there.

Check out this 1982 flyer, page 21, second turntable down on the right side.

1982 flyer

Works good, been sitting on the closet shelf for at least the last 5 years.

$75

(not sure what I will do with my 300 albums yet)

You are welcome to check it out.

Just like this one... (but not this one)

This is exciting... I just bought a new Crosley player from WALMART. I hate Walmart. But this thing was $100 and it's the coolest newest thing I own. It plays records, casettes, cd's, the radio, AND my Ipod. Amazingly enough, I dont even listen to my ipod now! I've been popping in old reggae casette tapes from yard sales and old records! And it's awesome because it's so cheap to buy casettes and records!

5/5. good on ya... i still have a ton of those. i was thinking of converting them over to sound files, but i hear you lose alot of the quality. most of them still play pretty good. i also have some early rap cassettes i will sell if anyone is looking. since they are vintage, i will not be selling them at garage sale prices how's the sound quality on that Crosley? i've seen mixed reviews on those too, i think.

All my 8-track tapes melted in the attic long ago (after a move)

No, never did take the albums digital.

Maybe some day I'll either sell them or start listening to them again.
Who knows! When Alzheimer's kicks in I may think they are brand
new rock songs that I really like

If you get an old turn table then yes.  Phono inputs want to see a different input level and have a RIAA equalization curve.  Also, there is usually a ground lug so the turntable and amp are at the same ground plane to eliminate hum and/or static pops.   If you get a new low or mid level turntable, i think the input level and equilization curves are already compensated...but am not positive, RTFM if in doubt.  If you gat an old turntable, but don't have dedicated phono inputs you can buy a phono stage that goes between the amp and turntable.

What Bamboo said.  Even if you have a phono jack on your amp you might not like what it sounds like.

Mine on the Harman Kardon did not sound very good.  They tend to skimp on those nowadays I think.

These guys have a lot of phono preamps.  I know nothing about them but the prices are very reasonable.

Or you can go all groovy tubey and make one.

http://www.tubes4hifi.com/pre8.htm mine, but without the industrial quality case.

The sound quality on the Crosley isnt bad! It's not like having a full system in the house, but considering what all it does, and for the price, it sounds pretty good! It gets the job done and I can crank the volume in the living room and hear it in the bedroom and be satisfied enough. Not the BEST, but definately worth the money spent.
