Already called. Lost a lot of friends back in the early 60's and on.

Although, my father was one of the photogs when they took the aerial survey of the "range". He had a lot of 10 X 20 prints from the originals he took from a B-17. The dump at Patrick was off the south-west end of the runway where the south end of the old "survival area" was. He gave all prints to the county many years ago to let them have record where the dump was.

My friend's sister died, and the hard part was when my friend Eddie walked down the street to say good bye!

I was raised on NE 2nd St from 1959 - 1972. We all drank from the hoses [both from deep wells (which could have had the PAFB contamination but probably were too deep) but mostly from the city water spigots (which came from Melbourne, so probably weren't contaminated from PAFB)] wherever we were that day. But, there were also some other factors that could have caused the higher than normal rates. For instance, the neighborhoods were pretty transient with a higher turnover than you might see elsewhere. There were quite a few families that were there the entire time, but, there were a lot of families that lived in the neighborhood for a year or two when they first moved to FL, but, then went to Sat Bch, IHB, etc when they could find a house. So, the population sample would be somewhat greater than you would see in a similarly sized stable neighborhood. Also, we were at the end of the line for Melbourne water, so, any contamination in those lines would have been concentrated at our end. CCAFS has been monitoring an underground "river" of tryke contamination for the past 30 years as it moved from the hangars towards the IRL (a distance of less than a mile) and it has moved pretty slowly. So, to have moved from the PAFB dump (which was a mile or so north and west of So. Patrick Shores) in the short time between the establishment of PAFB and the end of the 60s (about 20 years) would be unusual. Of course, a lot of us played at the dump and the golf course, too, so we could have picked up something from that. Golf courses, esp back then, were not known for a clean environment. This issue crops up every 20-30 years and so far there has been no correlation established from the groundwater, but, maybe. Just saying that there are a lot of variables and a lot of other potential causes which is why it has been so hard to figure out "why".

A missing point in all of this is that it was not only "PAFB" but also "BRNAS" for years before the Air Force took over.

That is true, but, the Naval Air Station has not been accused to have been using a significant amount of the suspect chemicals. Most of that came beginning in the 50s with the transition to an Air Force base with a much higher flight rate and a much larger contingent of airplanes.

BRNAS was commissioned in 1940, so we are still only talking about 30 years. As I said, the AF has been monitoring a river of tric and MEK for over 30 years flowing underground from the hangars toward the Banana River. Since the uncontrolled use of these chemicals at CCAFS (the 50s) to when I left the CCAFS Industrial Area in 2005 (50+ years), it had moved about 1/4 mile. So, it has been moving slowly. I'm not saying it's impossible (and I don't really know), but, for the So. Patrick Shores groundwater to be contaminated from the dump, the water would need to have traveled at least a mile in less than 30 years. From where the airplanes were cleaned, it is about 4-5 miles, obviously a much greater distance. Again, not saying that's not possible, just that there are many other possibilities. Nobody (that I know of) has been looking at Melbourne water as a source, but, Melbourne used to come thru and run the fire hydrants every year or two to flush out the water pipes that also were used to supply our drinking water. The water coming out of that flush was AWFUL looking. The Butlers (two houses away) were at the end of the line and we used to watch it flow for hours and couldn't believe we were drinking that stuff (and I don't remember anyone using a filter on their faucet). I don't know 1) if there has been a truly higher incidence (or if it just seems so) or 2) what the source is. People always want to lay it on PAFB, but, they could be looking in the wrong direction.

I had an ex-coworker die from Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mike Reynolds. Anyone knew him? He lived south patrick. I remember him telling me that he was in a study way back in the 80s and was diagnosed with hodgkins. He later died from it a decade or two later. Forget the timeline.

I've been all over the base having worked at the golf course and fished and skied in the survival area. Hoping I wasn't exposed. But, who knows?!?

I always thought that the big golf ball that caused your car radio to bleep every 13 seconds was and could radiate you. Remember that thing right on the corner of A1A and Pineda?

That's awful  ......  hopefully everyone here does not develop those negative effects

When I moved here more than 20 years ago, I was told to avoid South Patrick shores because of the cancer cluster caused by Air Force dumping
It comes up again every now and then, then the issue fades.

Half the level rougly deemed safe to drink Dont know anyone who drinks well water But everyone waters lawns and fills pools with it here They said chemical doesn't break down How concentrated is it in a pool
