Thoughts?
Discuss? In the far distant past, large sections of all of the islands have slipped into the sea as gigantic land slides. The resulting tsunamis have been 50+++ meters high. So, let's say that the south side of Hawaii slips into the sea next week. The resulting, Biblical, tsunami will hit California in 7 (?) hours. What do the "officials" do? If they are told that it is "likely", do you start moving the whole coastal population of the West Coast inland at least 20 miles? Where to? Or, do you wait until it actually happens and then only "hope for the best"? Knowing that a tsunami of that size and strength will "wash up" up to 1000 feet in elevation. Oh, and, be sure to know that "IF" this scenario is currently a reality in "official" circles, direct knowledge is very closely held and is otherwise Top Secret. Oh and, , , , the Canary Islands are known to do this and the resulting tsunami would actually wash all the way across Florida! How fast can you get out to deep water in a boat, or to northern Georgia? ------------------------- Dora Hates You Edited: 05/19/2018 at 06:34 AM by dingpatch |

I think the Vero Beach tsunami evacuation signs have disappeared. The Hawaiian islands have had enormous collapses in the past, presumably with big tsunamis. I haven't looked at the literature or books on Hawaiian geology to see whether any are known to have been during eruptions. Volcanos in general are sufficiently badly built that they're prone to collapse. You can see good examples in the Cascades or Wyoming. The Kilauea lava flows, while disruptive and destructive, so far haven't been especially big. The volcano has been erupting more or less continuously since 1984, it's just that activity has lately moved into residential areas, as it did several years ago. |
