I'm a bit of a cartophile. I just purchased this Antebellum Florida map to add to our collection of cool antique stuff to put on the walls of the Cocoa Beach restaurant. I think this one is particularly interesting. Check it out!
It's part of an 1847 Atlas called 'Mitchell's Universal Atlas, published in Philadelphia. I bought an original print that used engraved plates and hand colored printing. It's pretty great!

"the like button"
LOL, I do that all the time also. Cool map. Too bad it still isn't called Mosquito county. Maybe would have slowed down all the development. |

Awesome! I have a bit of a map fetish as well. Especially old maps. One of the coolest gifts that my wife got me was a turn-of the-century worls atlas. Very cool find!

I'd like to add that the Little Bar is NOT south of Matanzas anymore, FYI - It's been re-located to over in Goodland, on Marco Island.

I have an affinity for old maps too. The back of an old Florida map that I have breaks the population down by county. It's pretty crazy to think that in 1880 there were only 257 people in Dade County! ------------------------- @surferscomposition Daily (sort of) video reports in my IG stories |

I thought it was oddly specific on the map for the mapmaker to say that they were on the NE corner of Market and 7th in Philadelphia. I figured I'd Google Street View it to see what it looked like there now:
https://goo.gl/maps/CmMWxDwfcDT2 There's a big US Courthouse on that corner now, but neat old buildings still around it. |

Mosquito? Now its Palm Beach, Okeechobee, Martin, St. Lucie, Brevard and and Volusia. I love it when these maps are on the Antique Road show and they go through it. Very cool.

I'd love to have a print of that to hang up. Assuming that's an original please protect it from UV and thieves.
Thread of the month right here. ------------------------- Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system. In biology, such behavior of cells is called "cancer". |

I found this 1837 book from a google search after looking at this map wondering somethings.
Great description of Florida for that time period! The Territory of Florida: Or Sketches of the Topography, Civil and Natural ... By John Lee William http://books.google.com/books?...cker%20florida&f=false |
