We got a new 2016 Honda Civic EX a month ago. 2 liter, 4 cylinder, VTEC Earth Dreams engine. I had to go to the VA medical center in Lake Nona this morning from our house in Suntree. 90 some miles roundtrip; 95, 528 & 417, and return. Cruise set at 73mph. The trip computer reports milage of 42.6 MPG. Pretty good, if you ask me, , , , ,! The lady I work with got the EX-L with the 1.5 liter turbo a couple weeks before we got ours. She's been semi "hyper miling" and has been getting 47 MPG!

Oh, and, , , , this is our 6th Honda since 1983; Prelude, Accord, Odyssey, CRV, Accord, Civic

Pretty good considering the best I have done on my Prius overall is 56mpg for a tank. Individual trips over 60 that aren't strictly in EV are pretty common but not at those speeds. 59 mph seems t be my sweet spot

Yes, and the Honda Civic is a relatively inexpensive car, so your savings are even more! My daughter's Yaris gets really good gas mileage (42 highway, but it's a bit older) so it's another one I'd recommend.

I have a 2015 Focus and drive back and forth from Satellite to ORMC. Only get 33mpg but I set cruise at 83...had a Tacoma before we moved beachside so even 33 sounds great compared to the alternative.

My car gets around 19 mpg at 80. Not bad considering I have almost 5 times the horsepower of a Prius.

I don't need the horsepower to drive back and forth to the beach or the space center. When I sold my boat, my truck didn't make any sense anymore. Why get 16mpg when I can get over 50 for the same activities.

That's what my underpowered '89 Geo Prizm (disguised Corolla hatchback made in California by union labor) got on the highway.  My current Vibe (same factory) has enough engine to haul a boat, so milage isn't so great.

I get a whopping 9 miles per gallon. I would not know how to act with that kind of mpg.

The Civic hatch will return soon, too. Being able to slide a board in back, combined with Japanese reliability and that kind of mileage will have me looking close. Mazda 3 looks prettier to me, though.

I get about 29 @78 mph in my BMW with the normally aspirated inline 6, but if I ever get tired of it honda and mazda are top of the list.

Now, , , , I just did a "fit check" with an 8 ft 2x4. Dropped both back seats. Scooted the front passenger all the way forward and tilted it back all the way, and removed the head rest. 2x4 fit just fine with about 30 inches to spare! I estimate that a thick 10'0" will fit just fine. No worry right now as I have a good set of soft roof racks.

I did some Recreational Math and found it mildly interesting that I spend more in tire cost per mile than gas cost per mile.

I did similar math on my car, that's why it's not a Prius. The extra MPG didn't offsett the cost.
As long as gas prices are subsidized to be so low, that's the choice people are going to make and we won't make any progress on the big problem.
