I'm a physical therapist and long time surfer. I wanted to offer my advice and services to the 2ndlight community.
Some of the worst things I hear is that someone can't surf anymore. I recently traded shoulder rehab for a new shape. I'm happy to give advice on this forum and will always be open to bartering for services. J ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 |

Ok,thanks for the offer. As a victim of two rotator surgeries I am always looking for better shoulder strength. Last surgery was January so I am full on into strengthening that repair. What would you recommend in addition to external rotations? Thanks in advance...

Are you having any pain with certain movements? Paddling? Pop ups? If yes, where is the pain located?

HERC,
I broke my ankle in March. I'm walking now, but with a bit of s pimp limp. At what point in my recovery should I start to entertain the ability to surf again. ------------------------- |

SpinK,
Tell me more about your break some can answer that question more accurately. Did you receive some type of rehab? I'd first be curious if your limp is from pain, weakness, range of motion loss or some combo. It also depends what kind of board you ride and type of surfing you do...if you surf with stoked panda, perhaps maybe earlier. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 Edited: 06/21/2016 at 01:25 PM by HERC4810 |

Thanks HERC! I had ORIF on 3/10 to repair a trimalleolar fracture of my right ankle (front foot). I've been in rehab, but they're hesitant to give me a time frame for retuning to the surf. The limp is from pain (4/10) at the heel and ankle. The ankle is still a bit swollen so I have a decrease in ROM with flexing the foot upwards.

This forum has enough members with busted up surf related ailments for you to ride into retirement if you start charging, but if you're giving away free advice to all of them it might be enough to justify having a whole new category right under Surfing!

Spin k,
It's difficult to give you a timeline on something like that. They are reluctant because they don't want to disappoint you and that type of injury and surgery while it sounds universal can be different from case to case. If you made me guess I'd say as early as 6 months. Good luck and keep in touch with questions. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 |

Certon,
I'm open to the idea. Forum advice is quick and easy. I know some people will require face to face visits too. The shoulder I worked on last year was going to a common PT place in Brevard. I knew him prior to surgery and told him what would happen when he went there. After 2-3 visits, he called me and I started working on him, elimated his plain and had him back in the water. As surfers, we need someone who understands the specific requirements of our bodies for our sport. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 |

No pain. Released by doc after 3 months re-hab. No restrictions. Did a few sessions on my 7 footer to begin paddling and now back on my shorty (5-10). Do six pounds, 3 sets of ten 3 times a week with side lying external rotations. Goal is to progress to 10 pounds. Also abduction (side lying) with 5 pounds and another deltoid extension lying on my back with 5 pounds. Ill be 53 July fourth if that matters...

Liv,
There are many good exercises to do. I like shoulder depressions which can be done on the Arms of a strong chair in sitting. I would also Rec prone horizontal abduction with straight elbow and elbow bent at 90, also prone shoulder extension. Can't give you a weight Rec without seeing you. Just focus on good shoulder blade control, not letting it ride up towards your ear and keeping it in place towards the spine and depressed. You likely won't need more than 2# to start. You seem advanced to be doing side-lying abduction still. I would progress to more upright antigravity positions doing db raises single place and work towards diagonals (proprioceptive neuromuscular function patterns) using elastic tubing. Good luck. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 Edited: 06/21/2016 at 07:09 PM by HERC4810 |

Liv,
The shoulder is more than external rotation. It is a very mobile joint and requires strengthening in multi planes. Let me know if you run into trouble. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 |

Julian,
It's very enjoyable whether it's someone who surfs, or grandma who can't walk to the bathroom safely. PM me if you need some guidance. ------------------------- http://www.passmorept.com/blog/?page_id=50 |
