Hey congrats on graduation and your career choice.
Plenty work to be done in that field.
Nothing at the moment but will keep an eye out.

I would definitely check out usajobs.gov.

I have seen a quite few geologist/scientist positions nationwide.

Worth a look. Best of luck.

Let me know if you need a 'fresh perspective' on your resume and cover letter.

Do check the federal government.  I suspect that at the moment, agencies are looking for people with petroleum expertise, but you never know.

Federal hiring is probably slow at the moment because budgetary chaos might begin at the end of the year.  If there's no agreement on taxes, huge automatic spending cuts will hit the military and civilian parts of government.

Think about other parts of the country.  Forest Service and the similar Bureau of Land Management (mostly non-forest public land in the West, plus some western Oregon forest and one office in the East).   I can find that video of a guy in Montana bodysurfing the Yellowstone River.

I'm a former GIS/RS Analyst, and the work I found around here was scarce.  California, Georgia, Nevada, Col. Springs area...etc...had jobs 15 years ago.  Titan had a mapping contract in Afgahnistan (msp), but haven't checked on it in a while.

Environmental jobs are even harder to find.  UWF had a master's program in Coastal Zone Morphology, but those jobs are difficult to find but pay really well....at least 15 years ago they did.

Check with surrounding counties, cities, sheriff offices, police agencies, etc. as they all use ESRI products, but don't always have someone that knows how to really use the software.  Also check with each county property appraiser offices, as they are legally required to keep maps updated, boring work property mapping, but it's work.

Good luck!

My buddy has a geography degree from FAU and an MBA from UF, landed a nice gig at FPL headquarters in Juno Beach, helping them develop wind farms worldwide.

Get your P.G., and that will open lots of career options. The water management districts employ quite a few, maybe USGS or consulting firms.

Did you take any hydrogeology or groundwater modeling courses with Restrepo?

My GIS instructors send me internship opportunities all the time.
Not sure if you are interested in working for free in the Tampa area, but I got this email earlier this week:

GIS internship with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI).

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Manatee Geographic Information System (GIS) section is looking for a detail-oriented intern to work in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The intern's primary responsibilities will involve assisting staff members in GIS tasks such as digitization; creation and modification of shapefiles and geodatabases; database management and development; and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) of spatial data. Other responsibilities may include data entry and special projects.

Qualifications:
Working knowledge of ArcGIS 8.x, 9.x, or 10.x
Knowledge of GIS theories and methods, as demonstrated by coursework or training
Basic database knowledge; Microsoft Access literacy preferred
Ability to work independently and as part of a group.

Application Process:
Internships require a minimum two-month commitment. Starting and ending dates are flexible; hours are also somewhat flexible. Please indicate in your cover letter the position for which you are applying. Send a hard copy of your resumé with your cover letter, college transcripts (unofficial copies are sufficient if not applying for internship credit), a list of three references, and contact information to the following address:

Robin Allen
Internship Coordinator
Fish and Wildlife Research Institute
100 Eighth Avenue SE
St. Petersburg, FL 33701-5020

Applications may also be submitted as an e-mail attachment to: Interns@MyFWC.com

This intern position is open until filled.
All positions are unpaid. Housing and transportation are NOT provided.
For more information, please visit the FWRI Internships section.

If you sniff around the state and local gov't agencies will have intern/ full-time GIS positions. The full-time ones are hard to come by and people don't leave those positions unless something REALLY good is handed to them. FWC is great to work for but so many positions are now OPS. After I left there and was Brevard county's widlife biologist many of the positions were reconfigured. When the County cut my position, my coworker from FWC called and offered my my old position back but it did not have benefits and very little research opportunities.

Be flexible... I did alot of GIS work in the Late ArcInfo early ArcView days and it allowed me opportunities to work on projects from wildlife to code enforcement.

I haven't checked into it in over 10 years, but GISjobs.com used to have constant updates for jobs in real time.  There is also Reddy Creek with Disney, they do alot of research there, and do a variety of mapping projects.  Also, Harris had a remote sensing/GIS office in Melbourne....but again I haven't kept up to date with jobs or software in 10 years.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. It is very much appreciated. As far the government sector, thats a hard position to get into for entry...its over run by the more experienced guys. Im trying to get with a firm of any size really right now. Im really into remediation and the techniques because your always chasing a different problem and a different solution depending on the factors involved. I like to be stimulated with creative solutions haha Raddiver - I messaged you back by the way. You have sparked my curiosity my friend. 3rdworld - No I didnt take any classes with Restrepo actually. Dr. Oleinik was my main professor as well as Petuch because he taught all the SUPER technical nonsense that, actually now thinking about it, dont know why I took haha I had way more credits than I needed...my minor is in geography.

You could inquire with Spatial Technologies:
http://spatialt.com/company/contact.php
It seems they have a near-ideal work location.

I used to see the Harris GIS ads all the time, but not so much lately.

ENSCO (Melbourne office) seems to have been in that biz at one time.

Possibly SJRWMD or ACOE?
