9 days max

Kids are 11-ish

Could drive from Brevard as far as NC/WV, if not too far off interstates

Camp anyplace where it's cool at night; fireflies a bonus

Swimmable waterfall, tubing, whitewater rafting appropriate for kids' level

Scenic hiking in easy 1-day increments, appropriate for kids

Cabin deals also nice to know about.

Whatever ya got, throw it out!

Thanks for suggestions.

The Charlotte area has an artificial whitewater park--The National Whitewater Center, with loads of activities.  Nantahala Outdoor Center has been around forever.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is infested with trailheads.  I like the one at Richland Balsam, not far from Asheville.  In terms of busy attractions, the Linville Gorge mini national park is a rewarding walk, complete with waterfall.  Trees?  Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

We took the kids camping right above Cherokee. Cherokee itself is the armpit of the Appalacians and you had to go thru it coming and going. But, the camping area was really nice. There was a large stream that went thru it and you could pitch your tents right next to it. The Cherokees stocked it with trout, so fishing was good and you could swim in the eddies. Lots of fireflies and hummingbirds. A really nice trip. Also, Unicoi State Park, right outside Helen, GA is really nice. Waterfalls, nice camping area, hiking trails, etc. Also close to a state park (can't remember the name, but 441 goes right over the damn) with a GREAT sliding rock; waaaay better than the advertised one. Helen GA is somewhat of a tourist trap ("a quaint Alpine village"), but, when the kids get bored, you can take them down to walk around the town and take a tubing trip (my wife's favorite activity there). Nantahela white water rafting is only an hour or so away. North GA is not as cool, temperature wise, as NC, but a lot greener. We drove the whole Blue Ridge Pkwy and it was our favorite area.

Just remembered - Tallulah Gorge State Park. 441 goes right over the damn. You have a pretty taxing hike in and out to the sliding rock, but then you can swim in the lake on the other side of 441 to cool off after you hike out. A really, really, really cool sliding rock. They only let a limited number into the gorge/sliding rock each day, so get there early. All in all, I would recommend Unicoi over Cherokee.

be careful trying to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway...

the map shows 3 inches @30 miles per inch BUT...

the Parkway is 20 miles per hour at some places AND the map doesn't show the 100 switchbacks per mile that make each map mile about 5 miles of actual roadway...

We spent all day going 100 miles... very beautiful BUT 10 or 11 year olds are going to go crazy at the slow pace..

Jenny Springs is a great camping/ swimming area over by Gainsville...

St Josephs Peninsula is a great swimming/ fishing place up by Tallahassee...

National Whitewater Center near Charlotte (convenient to an Interstate) is probably stuffed with people in summer, but might be neat for kids with good water skills.

Nantahala Outdoor Center has been around forever, seems to be expanding.

I've been to Ducktown once, to see the devastation from copper smelting fumes.  I guess the area is slowly recovering.  Wasn't the Olympic artificial whitewater course there?

They did modify parts of the Ocoee River for various white water events for the Atlanta Olympics

Just spent a week at Appalachia lake NC. Has everything you listed and then some. Beautiful, secluded, canoeing, fishing, hiking, limited cell and wi-fi coverage (we viewed this as a plus!). Nearest town is Murphy, almost an hour away. Great rate on a spacious 3 bedroom, two bath cabin that was more like a house with a huge deck and an awesome mountain view of the lake. By coincidence the owners are from Satelite Beach and the rate for a week was about half as much as any other mountain rentals we searched. 18 and 16 year old kids had a blast once they turned off the impulse for electronic connections and turned on the nature experience. Highly recommended, let me know if you want contact info. DT Oh and the firefly show every night was amazing. Like I remember as a kid up north.

Davidson Riverrecreation area in the Pisgah forest (near Brevard NC). It close to the Parkway, has some cool waterfalls nearby, which has more waterfalls, has a cool natural water slide (Sliding Rock) very close. Great hiking trails. close enough to town for groceries etc.

It is near the Dupont Forsest which has more waterfalls.

Just don't make a mistake like we did and move up here.

The Blueridge Parkway realy isnt that slow of a drive. I rarely have to drive 5 mph-even in the bus.

It was 100degrees here last week, but, will be about mid-80's all next week.

we stay in Deep Creek N.C. every year around september. It is a national park located inside the smokey mountatins national park and about a 5 minute drive to Bryson City, N.C.  Tubing and hiking are great campsites are great and pretty cheap for a national park. We absolutely love it there. It is also about an hour drive to Natahala River outdoor park and they do whitewater rafting trips from there. It is a 10 hour drive from Lakeland.

Garcia, do you have detailed directions from Tallulah Gorge State Park to the GREAT Sliding Rock near there? I found the park general location on Google Earth at
34°43'05.71" N 83°21'51.11" W
and the dam i think you're talking about here:
34°44'21.71" N 83°23'45.46" W
and another nearby dam (Tugaloo) at
34°42'50.41" N 83°21'07.47" W

Is it the Bridal Veil Falls sliding rock?

Is that the advertised one, or the GREAT one?

In North Carolina, is the city of Sliding Rock
35°16'41.27" N 82°40'11.84" W
also the home of a good sliding rock?
Are there better ones in that area too?

Thanks again, everyone...
