Anybody out there have a Concealed Weapons License? I was thinking about getting one,but does it mean I can carry a GUN on me?Loaded?Or is it for like carrying it in a car or something? Not Loaded?
It seems like you ask a LAW ENFORCEMENT person it's all the same......you know, ummm, like you can,but ummmmmm, well you can't,uummmmm.

Go to the next gun show in the Melbourne Auditorium. I got mine from there. Easy to do.They will walk you through everything. You can't bring a gun to churches, schools. Go to your local P.D. and ask. I pesonally know of the Chief of Police at Satellite and I know he would be glad to explain the rules. Just walk in. Cool people.

yes, you can carry on your person, however there are a few exceptions as OceanAddict said. here is a link that should answer some of your questions.

Most local guns shops have a course.
If you drive down to Lauderdale you can get the permit in a few days instead of the "up to 8 weeks" they tell you if you mail it in. Also by going down there they do the finger printing and photos on the spot, which if you mail it in they tell you to go down to the local police station and have them do it, which I believe is an additional charge.

The other thing is that the license in Florida allows you to carry all kinds of weapons (not just a gun) like a knife, stun gun etc.... They teach you all this stuff in class.

If you can't pass an FBI background test don't bother with the application...you won't get your app fee back.

July 7-8th is the next big gun show at the Orlando Fairgrounds. You can get one there. Not a lot of amazing deals to be had there but its, big, fun as hell, and you can pretty much pick up and hold hundreds of guns to see which one looks and feels the best to you...before buying it online. lol

Also, Florida law allows you to carry in your car without a CCW so long as the firearm is in a zippered case/hoster, in the glovebox, etc. It just can't be readily available.

You can also go to Orlando to have your prints taken. Have to call and make an apt. Last year when I got mine there was a 6 week waiting list, and about 15 ppl waiting at 9 am. Class was $50 License was $117.

Take the class from Joe at Action. You won't get much training at the gun show.

sometimes I carry in a backpack, (in a holster of course) I wear alot of lighter clothing (50/50 shirts with outer wear like a button up / cardigan)

as of now my holster of choice is a full kydex (I use it for IWB and OWB) I might be looking into Raven Concealments Vanguard 2 or Comptac Minotaur

Steve at the Gunsite, on Merritt Island, can run you through the course.  He can also offer some legal advice on when to/not to shoot.

I've been carrying concealed for 10 years, but I also train weekly.  But, I didn't have to take the class because my prints are already on file, and my occupation allows for it.

You can carry it loaded in your car, but it has to be concealed. The 3 step rule is BS.  If pulled over then let the nice officer know you have one.  They will ask to hold on to it until the traffic stop is over (most likely).  This is for their safety, they have to be on guard for worse case scenario.  If you have a ccw then yes you can carry a loaded firearm concealed on your person.

The problem is if you need to take the shot.  The bullet doesn't stop when it hits the threat.....it keeps going.  If you shot the bad guy and the round continues and shoots an innocent by stander then you will get sued.  It all comes down to training an decision making...Even police agencies have been sued for this.

A good quality OC works wonders, and if you accidently spray someone it's not usually a big deal.

A good option is the DRT bullets.

Good point, I use Glazer.  It's the ammo I use for my weapon for home defense.

You dont need a CCW to have a gun or even carry one it certain conditions. If you do not have a CCW you can still keep a gun in your car but it is supposed to be '3 steps' away from being able to fire. If you are fishing, camping, or hunting you are allowed to carry, unless of course you're a felon, illegal, or an addict.

OC does not work on everyone. It can actually make someone more angry if sprayed.

I keep HPs for self defense. No worries about one of those going through someone or something and doing any 'collateral' damage.

"3 steps" is a myth. It must be "securely encased". This guy is pretty much the best source for info besides reading the statutes. http://www.floridafirearmslaw.com/

I'll second Rusty's recommendation. I have an older copy of that book. No-nonsense goldmine, tells it like it is.

I 100% support NRA, CCW or open carry for every non-felon citizen. learn the laws, take the course, ask a lot of questions. Personally, I'd keep at least $5-10,000 in your account if you intend to carry out of state to get a good defense attorney - if something happens (your fault or not). The legal downside is a huge hole to fall into, outside of FL. The forms you complete for CCW are the first half of the forms if you being charged with a firearms related felony. I wonder how many arrests from CCW violations there are compared to stories of lives being saved by CCW.

If you intend to carry often take several courses - CCW, tactical, and personal defense.

If you own a handgun you really should have a CCW permit. It's needed to legally carry a switchblade in FL as well. Join the NRA -- they are about the only ones fighting to keep your firarm rights and $35 from every owner is a small price to pay to protect our rights.
