Anyone out there have the capability to do this, know someone who can or know of some commercial operation that can. I have several cassette's that I would like to save before they become useless if possible. Willing to pay reasonable cash if it can be done. Probably no more than a dozen 90 min tapes. Mahalo! Aloha! Bob

Bob, u can do it yourself with your computer for alot less than you'd pay someone..
software is for sale at Best buy, OR u can find a program online and DL it for much
less, or free. I think all u need is Rca to 1/8 plug converters and an amp/ mixer source. google it. -Bob

Do you care about the quality of the recording?
If not so much, Windows "sound recorder" is probably on your computer, do a search in programs. If you have a built in mic, you're set. Just play the cassette (you still have a cassette player Better quality could probably be achieved using the same sound recorder but going from headphone out on your cassette player to the mic input on your computer. Probably a double male 1/4" jack needed, you may need to do some soldering, and use the volume on the cassette player to keep the level in the range that's not distorted. Trial and error there. |

Hi Mike. Thanks for the sites. it is very much appreciated. Larry, Mikes input seem like the way to go for me. Especially as I still have a couple of hundred tapes. I appreciate your effort and should this not work I would like to contact you again about your friend. Thanks again! Aloha! Bob

Bob, please let us know how it goes. I also have a few hundred cassettes I'd like to digitize.
Cassette playback is known to have problems with wow & flutter (speed variations in tape transport) as well as hiss that might be better eliminated with modern digital signal processing than the conventional analog Dolby noise reduction circuits. A lot depends on the quality of the source -- garbage in, garbage out -- so if the tapes are not originally high-end recordings, it may not be worth the effort. If you're happy with reasonably good (rank amateur audiophile) sound quality of of this, I might go that route. Larry, I'm curious as to how much "fancy stuff" Mitch does with his work. For good results and minimizing the work of converting hundreds of tapes, I still might go that route. Ditto for my LP collection, which has a lot of overlap with the cassettes. Back when your music choices were vinyl, cassette, and 8-track, the prerecorded tapes from the record companies were of such horrible quality that I always bought the LP and recorded to cassette for my mobile ".mp1" players (Sony Walkman and Pioneer KP-500 Supertuner) ------------------------- That boy's got somethin' wrong with his medulla oblongata. |

Cassettes were never high-quality. They were meant to save space and used in portable situations. You can't play your LPs in the car, and waiting all day for that song you love (from the radio) was getting old. Eight Tracks were bulky, but because the tape was wider, had higher quality. The cassettes solved a big problem (space) and made it so that you could easily carry ten to twenty albums in your car. Plus, cassettes still honored the side A and B traditions (something still stuck in my head). Song placement on albums used to mean a lot more than now. Look at "Hot for Teacher" from 1984. That song worked in that position (long drum solo) because it was on Side B, first song. The whole second side of that album is B-cuts. Two of them made it strong (HFT and I'll Wait). My two favorite songs from that album are still the last two: Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain. I also like Panama, second song on side A.
Back to the OP: Do it cheaply, because the sound quality was never very good for those old cassettes.
However, if you're interested, you can actually upload them into your PC, then get yourself inexpensive mixing software, and re-mix them to your taste. You won't be able to pull out each individual instrument, but you can do some stuff to clean it up. If it were me I'd just send them through, turn them into MP3s, and just enjoy. No reason to spend a ton of money. ------------------------- It's official. I'm bored with this.

You know, you could buy the equipment, and then tell some teenager you'll give him fifty cents a tape. He'll earn a hundred bucks and you'll save yourself time. But really, it's not that hard. Just play the tape, walk away. An hour later it's done.
