I remember seeing "Birth of a Nation" when I was in film school (Ithaca College class of '69).
We were shocked at the outright racism depicted and even endorsed by the film. Nevertheless they showed it to us because of the groundbreaking cinematograpy and effects by film pioneer D.E. Griffith and his cameraman Billy Bitzer. I always loved that name and will never forget it since it was a question on my Film Production 101 final: "Who was D.W. Griffith's cameraman?" My first wife's Grandfather was a film pioneer and worked with Griffith. He loved to tell Billy Bitzer stories. I guess Bitzer was quite a character. Racist or not, "Birth of a Nation" is considered classic cinema and was about the Civil War. ------------------------- Wooden Boards for Iron Men |
