After just two years in orbit, ESA's GOCE satellite has gathered enough data to map Earth's gravity with unrivalled precision. Scientists now have access to the most accurate model of the 'geoid' ever produced to further our understanding of how Earth works.

The geoid is the surface of an ideal global ocean in the absence of tides and currents, shaped only by gravity. It is a crucial reference for measuring ocean circulation, sea-level change and ice dynamics - all affected by climate change.

maybe even help predict earthquakes

Looks like a paper mache model.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Booty, you might want to go to "profile" and see if you signature doesn't have a bunch of hard returns.

The geoid is sort of a puzzle.  Andes stick out, Himalaya and Tibet don't.  Hawaii really sticks up.

Well, some of it makes sense.  Higher altitudes mean less gravity.

In fact, if you have two synchronized clocks (atomic clocks), and you place one at sea level, and the other at the top of the Andes or Himalayas, they will not stay in sync.

The closer you get to the planet's surface, the stronger the gravity.

Attend weight watcher's meetings in Nepal.

I am outta here.  I'll be back to the NSR in the fall.  Until then, have a nice spring and summer.

Later, dudes.

Noticed the same WW.

Gravity is effected by density so
some subsurface discontinuity of composition
could be at work.

Similarity of Himalayas and Rockies
(not showing much gravity)
could be uplift of sedimentary (light) in higher proportion
rather that volcanic (heavy) as Hawaii and the Andes?

Really cool,
look at the gravity "hole"
left in the Indian Ocean basin
from where India rammed Asia.
