Hey everyone I am leaving for Costa Rica on Saturday for what is going to be my first surf trip ever. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to pack the boards in the boardbag. I have a double board bag...it's a 6'8" and I am going to be taking two 6'0" boards. I also have an FCS daybag that I am going to put one of the surfboards in. I tried to test fit the boards today, and with one board in the day bag and the other with nothing on it, they fit kind of tight. I am worried because the one board with no bag or anything is vulnerable to a ding very easily because the fabric is so tight on it, there's no protection except for the fabric between the outside and the board. Any suggestions? Also, how should you put the boards with each other? nose to tail? one upside down and one right side up? Any help is greatly appreciated, I don't want to get to Costa and have to take a board to the shop to get fixed

Hey man everytime i go anywhere with my boards wrap the board bag w/ caution tape, you know how those handlers just love to throw things!!!!, but go buy some bubble wrap, and wrap those bad boys up nice and tight or just simple clothes and towels will do the trick i have done both and no problems so far. As far for nose to tail board setup i always nose-tail in the two bag setup, dont know if it helps but never had any problems like metioned above hope i helped, and hopefully you'll ctach some beatiful waves man, and enjoy!!!

Thanks....yeah since this is my first trip I am so pumped....I check rovercam everyday and think about how pounded I am going to get! I am just worried about my babies making it alright! I am probably worrying too much but I don't want damaged boards to dampen my trip!

I'm wondering if I should use the fcs day bag as a divider between the two boards, instead of putting one board in it and leaving the other out of it.

The way we pack them is with bubble-wrap(small/med. bubble) and also split-tube pipe insulation. The stuff costs about 10 dollars to do each board. First put the tubing on the rails, might have to tape, and let the tubing go past your rails, bend it to cover and protect the nose and tail Then cover your deck and bottom with the wrap. Use any extra tubing and bubble wrap for more padding for the nose and tail. if a board wont fit in the day bag,
maybe lay it down flat on the bottom on your doublebag first before putting in the boards. But if your boards are flying with no charge, it might be best to keep them seperated, 1 in each bag after being padded. If there is a charge for each board and youre trying to save money then pack them together in the double bag with the day bag on the bottom or in between them. Fit the boards together with 1 scooted up as far as it can and still fit in the double bag and with a layer or bubblewrap in between and not deck to deck or bottom to bottom. Adjust them for the best fit, wrap tape around them to keep them together and snug. And into the double bag. Wrap and protect them good, especially rails, nose and tail, and extra wrap/padding on the bellys. And your fins removed of course. The baggage handlers toss boards around like suitcases, you cant be too careful. Ok, this is how i do it, i'm sure there are alot of other ways and even better ways. Anyone else sharing their ideas, i will be taking notes too. Also, when you unpack your boards, careful not to rip up the bubblewrap and tubing. Roll it up in put in a safe place for when you repack for your (uhg) return trip home to Lake Florida. Have fun there and good luck with the boards. |

Also, bring plenty of surf stickers with you, not only for the local kids there but for any small dings. And a small tube of Suncure is always a good idea (and piece of sandpaper) for any dings the sticker-fix wont handle. Give a report on things when you get back. My son will be out there for a week too. Catch some waves Brah.

just MAKE SURE you check for damage AT THE AIRPORT! once you get home and notice damage, they will just say they have no responsibility......NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU PACK IT! those guys tossing luggage around don't know and don't care how easy it is to destroy your board.

wait, if the guys at the airport do damage the board, are they under some kind of obligation to pay for it?

Matt-
First off DO NOT TAKE SUNCURE... They will confiscate at the airport. (LATEST NEWS TO ME TOO!!) The fact that your board fit your bag tight is good. If they move around they get damaged! Definetely put one board inside the day-bag (preferrebly the better one Everything will be alright dude, and I don't say that because you got thr bags from us Have fun and lots of good waves... Anyone got any tips for packing a board with glassed on fins? Moving to SF in two months and don't trust the moving company with my boards. I've seen a couple people suggest getting some styrofoam, cut a slit in it and fit it over the fins, then pack as usual. Anyone have any experience with this or maybe some other methods? |

Pool noodles along the rails, and pack clothes, towels, and anything alse you need to take with you that will offer some padding inside the board bag. None of my boards have ever been damaged usig this method. |
