A lot of these newer wetsuits are labeled as having limestone neoprene or Japanese neoprene - how is the material in comparison to the standard neoprene? Less comfortable / lighter?

Any other material/ brand recommendations ? Haven't bought a suit in a couple years so I'm not up on all the tech. Main concern is comfort/stretch.

I'll say that the rip curl E4 from a few years ago was super warm for a 3/2, but felt really tight in the shoulders (rough for paddling).

Had a Hurley 3/2 about 5 years ago and it was ultra comfy, nice and stretchy, but pretty cold. Wind cut right through it. It was their basic $250 model. Also had a huuuge waist for a large. Must have been 36" - all kinds of slack in the belly.

While I'm at it - O'Neils current base model top (the $50-60 ones) are terrible in every way. Bought one last December. Harsh to touch, stiff. I actually returned it for a rip curl in the same price range and it was great.

The newer neoprene formulas have come a long way.
My favorite suits at the moment are from hyperflex.
Parent company is henderson scuba, one of americas oldest makers.
They have a great product size range, great prices.
Super friggin stretchy. Only thing close is oneill....
but: half the price

New Zealand Surf Journal talked to Seventhwave, a Christchurch wetsuit manufacturer, about neoprene, among other things. Also used and reviewed wetsuits from Rip Curl, O'Neill, and Need Essentials.

Two things,

1) I keep coming back to Rip Curl and yes, they're tight if you go by the sizing chart.
I buy one size larger, a Large Short even though I'd be a Medium on the chart.

2) I'm fascinated by the "limestone neoprene": CaCO3 to CaO via high temp oxidation.
CaO + 3C -> CaC2 + CO, then use the carbide (CaC2) to make acetylene, dimerize and
halogenated to make the chloroprene for neoprene.

Ya, but where do the 3Cs come from? The only reference I see is that they typically come
from petroleum coke. In other words, it's a petroleum hydrocarbon byproduct wetsuit, not
a limestone one (?) Doesn't sound nearly as attractive.

And then again, I could be wrong...
(curse the lack of line breaks)

The Rip Curl E Bombs always feel a bit tight at first but they always break and become much more soft by the end of the season for me. Rip Curl and Xcel make the best off the rack neoprene imo. Theres always the boutique ones but I'm not paying $600 for a suit lol

The japanese limestone based neoprene has been used in freediving suits for years. But they are also a little different with fit. you need to lube yourself up to get in them. any one seen these yet https://www.quiksilver.com/men-highline-pro-1mm-wetsuit/?npk=356843144&heid=5e93049dba04a65a0f5df2c314843361d8db8a79be82119e3db5f700a3d7c1a2&camp=em_qs_us-en_e_neolane_193-highline-pro-wetsuit_-_all_wetsuits_-_broadcast_10032019&utm_source=adobe_campaign&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=193-highline-pro-wetsuit&bxid=356843144

$700 for a suit that is 1mm thick but equal to a 3mm with more flex . Good for water temps 56 to 64 , but seems to have limited size selections available

The Highline Pro website looks overwhelmed by visitors and looks close to a sellout. Only a bit more expensive than Hurley's made-in-Japan 3mm wettie that supposedly can cover 4mm territory.

My first wetsuit was a navy bell helmet suit with hot water ports. Wasn't conducive for flotation. Then I got a Bailey suit with, what seemed like, shag carpeting inside the legs. During that time, we had access to Barrier Island NC property while the condos were being built. The first building erected was the pool/hot tub. We'd surf the break over the dune, then run back and jump into the hot tub to get out of our gear. One day, I stood up and my legs swelled out 5 times the size, due to the hot water. My buddy's legs blew out. Apparently, the "carpet" was what kept mine from doing the same. We got to use that for 2 years.

I just decided to splurge on a custom 7till8 Japanese limestone wetsuit. Will probably be a month before I get it but I'll share my experience and thoughts.
