So I decided to join a friend of mine at the beach today
and he wanted to go to jetty Park because of the fact that
some of his family wanted to go out and enjoy the water.
When I got to the beach and met up with him The Park
rangers had told him that they are not letting anyone in the
water because they was an blue green algae bloom that
stretched from Melbourne all the way up to jetty Park. Does
anybody have any confirmation on this? it seems rather random
and I have not heard about it in the news but I do trust the park
officials at the same time.

Thank you

There is algae in the water right now along the shoreline, extending midway into the surf zone. I've noticed this for a couple weeks along Patrick AFB.

Here's an FDEP report on Friday, 7/19/19, from the Jetty Park area:

Algal ID: Co-dominant taxa were: filamentous cyanobacteria (Lyngbya-like) and Ceramium sp.

Total Microcystin Toxin (micrograms/L): not detected

Other Toxin (micrograms/L): Anatoxin-a: not detected; Cylindrospermopsin: not detected

Here's an interactive map from FDEP to help check: https://floridadep.gov/AlgalBloom

As of now, I'm not aware of any beach closures. Cocoa Beach Pier is packed with folks in the water.

Has anyone gotten sick from being in the water that you know of?

I'm guessing there's no health concerns then. I'm no scientist though

I've been doing beach runs/XFit for the last 3 weeks from 2nd Lite to 16 streets. I get in the water after every training session and have had NO ill effects.

A few from a FUN morning....

Blue green algae bloom??
Not really, but some yucky seaweed on the inside.

But it was a fun morning before and after the storm.

I've been surfing in the Cocoa Beach goo for the last month and have had no ill effects.

Well, one ill effect, I'm pissed that I can't fish.

I call it summer silt, I believe it's a red algae of sorts but seems to show up in the summer when the waters warm up and there's a lot of thin skinny water where the sun penetrates it real well and seems to grow this stuff, stays inside mostly and seems nontoxic, weird stuff...

There is also speculation this profusion of seaweed is a result of cruise ship dumping. I wonder if there is a correlation...

It's been here for more than a month and a half. I've never seen it for more than a few days and I'm going on 35 years in Cocoa Beach surf.

If it's up welling, why is the water so hot?

Here is an interactive algal bloom map.

Not my map

Yep, Jetti park is listed.

It's still thick as soup in Cocoa Beach, but now it is turning black.
