Professer Hopf. Trier Germany. 2012

The head of the humerus was broken into 12 pieces. The neck of the humerus was broken in 2 places....

I still have that titanium plate and all the screws. No problem. 98% rotation. PT was hot yoga and swimming.

No pain, no gain.....

Satbob, I am a little over two weeks out and am shocked at how well things are going, I slept in bed last night without the sling and got 6-7 hours. When we saw Dr. Barnard on Monday, two weeks post op, he said "wait till you come back in four weeks, you are going to be thrilled". I already am! Best of luck to the Mrs. too.

Wow. That pic looks like when my 9yo got the screw gun and "fixed" the gate. WINNER!

Went to er yesterday. The shoulder was x rayed. I suggested a torn rotator cuff but the film shows very little cartilage in the joint. Next week is the ortho.

Good luck at the ortho. At (y)our age, there's probably a bone spur or two in the mix. Missing cartilage is common as well (both my shoulders) at this age. Stem cell treatments might be feasible now to alleviate some of that.

MRI is much better than X-ray at examining soft tissue. You'll probably be sent for one (or at least should be). Dr. Woodward said the MRI is usually a good guide, but there's nothing better than the arthroscopic camera; once he gets that inside, he can find and fix other issues as well. So it was with my torn labrum. Hope all goes well. Keep it iced and barely mobile until the exam.

Good luck, indeed at the ortho. I'm starting to feel quite lucky that I merely had a torn rotator cuff with bone spur that had done much of the cutting.

Looks like a SLAP tear and some disc issues. Bone spurs too from bone on bone and cartilage waving the white flag. He asked if I was a competitive swimmer. Sure.

Anybody here still surfing after?

You blew it. Woodward retired.
J/K, Other skilled surgeons available.

Still surfing? Oh hell yes, because my shoulders don't hurt anymore. And not on some nostalgic noseriding numbskull relic whirly twirly fairly princess dancing log. Whoever started the lie about spending more years on a longboard than a shortboard obviously didn't get their shoulders fixed.

Worst mistake is waiting.

Yea, saw him 2weeks ago, refered me to Dr. Palsis, and said he wouldn't bother cleaning that mess up, time for a new one.
I'm just waiting on them now.

If I had not broken my arm 12 weeks after shoulder replacement I'd be surfing. Six months out of having arm fixed and feel there is a chance I may surf again but taking it slow at 61 yrs of age.

OMG! lol

I've seen him slashing it up and dodging the fishes at Pelagic Point. A real fun to watch surfer.

SurferSince1965, you will be in the water before too long, just don't get discouraged with how out of surfing shape you are. I almost puked the first day back after a heavy surgery and that was on the initial paddle to the outside on a three foot day.

I was right.

Thanks Cole, I looked this morning and it was tempting but I'm not there yet. I can do a few half push ups though and I'm just 6 months out

Keep at it. Slow progress is better than no progress, and at some point you might be surprised.
