In a heat against Mick a couple years back Kelly did some crazy flip flop where the judges did the same thing ... deduct for a 1 in a million maneuver all because they have "rules", much like Human Resource departments in large corporations have.
They turn judges into mindless lemmings rather than creative improvisors as they should be given lattitude ... it's called the visual arts.

When he fell and grabbed his board then came out, I screamed ... and they deducted.

Yup~~ I give him credit for seeing that right from way back in the paddle back out. It actually looked to me at first he went paddle battle with Jordy, then realized he was focused on getting position, and I don't think Jordy even saw a right there. Jordy's bottomless backdoor just before it was more critical to me and shoulda scored higher. ymmv--------------------- also, How do they score identical scores in a final considering EVERY wave is subjective?! ---- I actually think Medina's a 'monster' and a super talent but man~ style points and technical points seem to be confusing. Dude knows how to win, and that's all that counts.

Robbed? No. The judges probably thought that Gabby's waves were more technical. Gabby showed some crazy skill in that heat. Jordy is a great surfer but Gabby is better.

I thought Jordy got underscored on that keg right. Ross Williams also commented that the score differential was a little wide. Ross of course has to be very diplomatic as a commentator. I also noticed that the judges barely gave any extra
for Julian Wilson's after barrel air...which you could consider "technical". The commentators said that Medina was a heavy favorite in his heat with Jordy. There is no doubt that Medina is a competitive animal.....but IMO Jordy surfs better, esthetics do matter(example# one Tom Curren). Jordy should have won that heat. A little off topic but I think Jack Robinson surfs better than all of them...he surfs like AI with spot on technique/style.
