So I'm 36, 6'1", 200#.

Long story short was away from surfing a little while, after a divorce blah blah back at it now and think I need a new board. I own a 9'6" and a 6'2". The longboard is fun and works well, but when I want a shorter board, the Erie feels a little small/narrow/thin for my fat ass now. Wondering what else is out there now for an in between. Thinking 7' -7'6" range, and wider/rounder? IDK like I said looking for advice.

Well what are the dimensions of your current 6-1 like? I wouldnt go funshape style, but maybe beef up that shortboard "rocket fish" style.... add a couple of inches, and fatten it up... particularly in the front half to help you catch waves.

I am about your size and this is a fun type shape for what you may be looking for. http://www.2ndlight.com/fusetalk/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=181326&enterthread=y the craigslsit ad expired. The board is 7'0" x 22 1/4" x 2 3/4"

Go see Jeff Haney , take your current board and talk to him . We can all give advice but a shaper is the guy you want to talk to . I prefer epoxy's in headhigh and below poly above headhigh. Many different blanks and glassing lay-ups these days .Just go see him...

Great idea, I think that might yield the best results just being unhappy with the current setup. The current short is 6'2", x 19"x 2 1/8"

What about tails, I guess I never really fully understood the differences.

Current was a fish with some little channels on the lower rails.

Yeah, that's too small for you, but if that was your stick, you don't need to make a funshape your "go-to" board. Good suggestion of taking your stick to a shaper and teling him your deal. As far as tails, I find the swallows help those wide tails go on rail easier.... depending on how much weight you put on since that board really worked for you, I'd go up an inch or two, widen 3/4" and thicken to 2 1/2 (but pull the rails down a bit)

There is "having" a short board and there is using it for what it's for.

Do you like to hit the lip? Do you like to do wrap around cutbacks? Do you watch the WSL and immediately want to go out and rip? If you said no to these just go with the fun shape and ride waves. If you think hell yes stay small and get some volume in that board.

Thanks again guys, great responses. Just trying to ride, there isn't much smacking the lip at the moment, be happier to just go out and be able to catch a bunch. Feel like I miss a lot on the current board. Maybe I'll get the stoke back and be able to go more, but for now just happy to get out.

I would go talk to ricky carroll and or stu sharpe personally.
A slightly longer board with a modern bottom contour and featherlight weight is going to allow you to catch and ride alot more waves, especially when it's bigger surf.
And really wont impede your ability to surf smoothly and aggressively, without all the herky jerky stuff wiggling away out there these days.
Another suggestion is to go rent and try some different designs for yourself, some of the shops have wide varieties of progressive shapes to try.
I can point you to several places to try them i you'd like.
Good luck, have fun!

Go see Kelly at Another Ride or Dennis up at Core Surf depending on which end of the county you live in....both super cool and will get you into the right board...

I would add Tom Neilson to that list, his Floaty Fish model has got to be the best all around board for Florida.6'6" Floaty Fish

Come now Greenie, I think there are plenty of us (older) guys who surf short, enjoy the ability to dive deep on the paddle out, and flow with the wave rather than hop about like the kids on WSL. No need to age out into a funshape unless you just want to. And, I second Tom N. and Flying Floaty Fish suggestion above. Great guy, great shape. No, I'm not him but I do have several of his boards, and slept once in a Holiday Inn.

Over the years, the 4 best shapers for me have been Kech, Tudor, Ricky, and Tom. Brian moved to Hawaii, so yeah, but his boards were all around the best for me personally... pure magic. We are similar in size and I surf everything from a 5'9 retro to a 9'6 longboard, with my shorties coming in at 6'2 & 6'3 and my fish hybrid at 6'1. I love my RCs and Ricky is a cool cat, but my last couple of boards have been sluggish under my feet. Could be because I was less specific on what I wanted the boards for, so fault could be mine because they do perform extremely well in overhead punchy surf. However, the last Kech I had performed well everywhere as did every BAT I ever had shaped for me. As far as really dialing in on the small wave typical FL surf, you really can't go wrong with Tom's FFF.
