If you are going to compete it is completely understandable to skip a contest because of an injury. But I don't understand backing out to surf big CloudBreak- that is if he is serious and you have to be to compete. I'm getting the feeling that Slater is done with competitive surfing. I mean mentally and he should come clean. Maybe he has a unwritten agreement with the WSL to stay in the picture for ratings sake.

I'm sure I'll get bashed for this, for slightly agreeing with MyCat, but I'm a little dissappointed in the WCT and Kelly's turnup for events this year. With Fanning retiring and Kelly passing on a few events, the year really hasn't been the same... the wavepool is cool, but it seems that all focus has turned away from the CT and towards other big things. Soon as Kelly parted with Quik he stopped winning... Politics? Either way, would be nice to see the greats putting out more video and tour performances again.

My theory why he hasn't officially 'retired' is due to wanting to surf in the first ever Olympics in 2020.

Kelly doesn't have the drive to surf comps anymore. Follow him closely and look at the stuff that he gets excited for nowadays (Drew Brees, Shaun White at Surf Ranch). I don't think he will do many comps anymore unless it has a lot of bright lights and coverage (like the New York contest from 2011, or the Founder's cup).

Eleven world championships - 14 if you count the three years he took off - and you are ragging on him from your couch in Canaveral while sucking on a dirt?

On the subject... I do wish he would retire and just pump out some video clips. Kinda tired of seeing all these will he/won't he stories on the surf sites. He still surfs so good in certain conditions and could do some amazing short videos if he tried. 

I would like to see more Legends Heats. Occy vs. Sunny Garcia. Occy vs. Tom Carol. Slater vs. Dorian. And make the rest all surf against each other riding switch

Cherry picking bombs for fun is one thing if slightly injured, having to complete every maneuver on critical closeouts to finish alot of waves in comp is way more demanding on a foot....He glides in at his leisure now till fully healed, bet he does return to the jersey when fully able. As far as another title? Doubtful/possible?!?
