Going to CR tomorrow. First time renting a car there. Any of you know how much the tolls will be and how many are there on the way to say Jaco? Might go to Santa Teresa too. Yew! thanks. oyea, one more thing... is it still a common practice to pay off the police if you get pulled over? or was it ever a good idea?any suggestions about that situation would be noted. There are several tolls on the "new" highway to the coast. Don't remember how much exactly, but I don't remember them being excessive...maybe $5-7 in total. Have not paid the "Policia" toll in many, many years. Goof luck and have fun! ------------------------- Surfing is my passion...obsesssion... addiction! Can't imagine life without it! |

Paying off toe policia only encourages their corrupt ways - don't do it. Check with your rent a car company - quite sure most tell you to bring tickets to them when you turn in your car and they pay any fine and bill you. IIt's way cheaper and easier. |

yes, only significant toll is to get on the new highway, which i recommend. any other tolls you encounter will be less than a dollar, and they end when you get to the coastline, except maybe for 1 or two near major towns (quepos maybe) |

The toll road runs from San Jose to just before Caldera. TO get to it from the airport, take the highway west from the airport and look for the COYOL exit. Take that exit and head south for about 4 km. and look for the highway sign to Orotina - that's the toll road. You pay from 550-720 colones for each toll, there are 4 of them from there to the exit you take at POZON, which has signs to go to Jaco and Manuel Antonio.
If you stay on the toll road, it will take you to Caldera (the port), and Boca Barranca, and then Puntarenas exit (if you want to take the ferry to Santa Teresa) or on to the Interamerican Highway going north to Liberia. There is a fast pass lane, but I don't know how to get one - yet. Luckily I do not have to drive to the city that frequently.

I never pay the cops, and ask for the ticket and they have never given me one, but a local says take the ticket and throw it away and don't tell the rental company. It never follows you, it's against the tag and the company pays all tickets each year when they renew the tag. I now have an SUV there so no more rentals, but now I will have to pay the cops!

If you are taking the ferry to santa teresa make sure to look up the ferry times. And the process for the ferry is a bit weird. Here is a link to a site that does a good job explaining: https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/puntarenas-paquera-ferry/ havanabama - I think the rental car company would charge your credit card when they find out about the ticket and I believe if you dont pay a ticket you wont be let back into Costa Rica unless the ticket is paid. And ya if the cop asks for a small bribe vs a huge ticket guess what I am going to do. ------------------------- - |

Had a great time, thanks for the road tips. Ended up staying at my cousins place at the Hermosa Beach Bungalows, Bungalow 2 - check it out on Airbnb, my cousin will make sure you have a great stay. Check them out! right down the beach from the main drag of Playa Hermosa. A stones throw away from "the tree". We were there from monday - saturday with minimal people out during the week. Small but fun swell. enough to get some ins-and-outs on the stand out sets( I got lipped mostly), that place picks up any bit of energy. http://www.hermosabeachbungalows.com/?item_id=2 ------------------------- The Dude Abides. http://www.rollerphotography.com/ Edited: 06/10/2018 at 05:05 PM by LostSherpa |
