Looking for recommendations on reputable orthopedic surgeon prefer specializing in ankles and / or sports injuries . Searched the forum and see lots of shoulder / knee - just curious anyone's experience with ankles. Congenital ankle issues and numerous roles skate/surf have chronic limitation / pain not alleviated with rehab. Last ortho surgeon had assistant spend 30 minutes selling me on shoe inserts....

I'm in this business . My top foot and ankle guy in Orlando is Dr Papa with Jewett orthopedic group in winter park . He is a tough guy to get in to see , but you will get a great opinion and he is a fantastic surgeon

Dean Cole at Florida hospital is a good one too. He does ankle replacements if need be.

Dr Cole is also a task to see, but he will tell you the truth. He's done my ACL replacement, hip replacement and reconstructive surgery on a hip due to a run in with a drunk in a 1976 Nova. I still play league level soccer and surf on a short board.

Dr. Luc J Teurlings in Merritt Island is very good. I've seen him a couple times for shoulder and knee issues.

Careful with Teurling, he wanted to use a patella tendon for my ACL and that is a terrible method for surfers. I also have two good friends that came out for the worse after surgery.

The moral of this story is second opinion.

SrfGtr , I'm glad you have an appointment with Dr Papa , he is worth the wait. If you want to see someone local great , but still see what Dr Papa has to say . Good luck moving forward

I will third Dr. Papa at Jewett. He did ankle surgery for a friend of mine and has looked at mine and shaken his head - we may do something in the future but not yet. Ironically mine is too bad to operate on now - they may do a partial fusion at some point (mine isn't my ankle - it's my upper foot so a bit more complex as I won't be able to walk well after and they want to put it off while I'm still mobile). But at least he's realistic. I wouldn't see anyone locally for that - ankles are awfully complex.

Unfortunately I also did not have a good experience with Teurlings

It's definitely worth taking the time to find a legit doctor in Orlando. The doctors here in Brevard suck. It's annoying to make the drive but it depends on how much that ankle is worth to you.

From what I've seen the doctors at Jewitt or Orlando Orthopaedic Center are highly regarded. I've been dealing with a knee injury and I wish I had gone to them first instead of messing around in Brevard.
