I was stationed in the USCG on Governors Island in 1983 and part of 84. My buddy Jeff and I were on our way back to Manhattan from a surf at Long Beach. About 2 blocks from the Brooklyn Queens expressway we tried to take off at a light and the transmission in Jeff's car literally fell apart. It was dusk and we were in a pretty rough neighborhood.
Not sure what to do, we pushed the car down a side street and left it in front of a church.
We grabbed our surfboards and backpacks full of valuables and figured we would find a phone booth and call a tow truck (aren't cell phones great?). No such luck! By now we had passed a couple of locals that looked pretty gnarly, and they turned around and started following us, calling names and challenges, and increasing in number! We decided we were safer down on the expressway than we were up on the side walk with these guys, so we headed down the exit ramp, boards in hand, to try our luck down there. The locals were looking down on us to see what would happen. We no sooner got to the side of the road, I mean within seconds, when a rusty green VW bus swerved from two lanes over and stopped right in front of us. The guy was leather skinned from years in the sun, shirtless in a pair of old faded Katins or Birdwells, long hair sitting in the lotus position on a plywood platform behind the wheel. He had removed the seat and installed hand controls so he could drive like that. He looked at us and grinned, said "Hi , I'm Ira, I used to surf, Get in!" . Me and Jeff looked up at the locals who were slack jawed at the spectacle, and jumped aboard the magic bus and drove away with incense burning and tie dye flapping and a profound sense of relief.
