Update: Orded the Aloe Gator on line. Stuff is like vasoline - really stays on. Also, when it got cold and the stuff was in the back of the truck it hardend up so much I couldn't get it out of the tube, haha! Reminded me of winter surfing in VA during college. Wax on the heater vent of the car so it would be soft enough to use when you got there. ------------------------- add a signature since I'm here in profile anyway |

A New Zealand brand called Skinnies is crowdfunding to start production and sales in the US. I know nothing about them; only reason I know the name is because they sponsor Derek Morrison's surfing photo email "Box of Light." That said, NZ and Australia have more trouble with ultraviolet radiation than we do (ozone hole), so they take sunscreen seriously. They are also seriously outdoor people. |

Aloe Gator SPF 40+ Gel Used this on my last Costa trip at the advice of 2nd Light.com. It was the best I've used. It's my go to sunscreen from now on.

So I am in Costa Rica almost year round and this dry season has been HOT! I try to avoid midday sessions too, but sometimes the tides and wind are only right between 12-2. So I did recon and found out that sunscreens with oxybenzone or similar chemicals are absorbed into your skin and then help to block UV rays. The verdict is out on if it only exacerbates skin cancer. It is also harmful to the reefs. Zinc and Titanium Oxide are not absorbed into the skin and act as a physical barrier to the suns rays. It is not harmful to reefs. So knowing this I bought some Badger 30+ sunscreen and used it a few times. What I noticed is that with my sweat and rubbing my nose, it would come off and I would get burned. So I went back to the evil stuff. Right now I am using NoAd 50+ which was $22 for a 16 oz bottle in Costa Rica! It is working right now to prevent sunburn.
In the past I've used Aloe Gator, the Gell works great but is $16 a 4oz tube. The lotion does not work, and the alcohol smelling quick dry stuff was nasty and didn't work after either. Ocean Potion 30 was nice feeling, but came off too soon from surfing and sweat. Ocean Potion 50 worked, but only for sessions shorter than 2 hours. Hawaiian Tropic 30 also worked for sessions under 2 hours.
After any major sun exposure, it is more important to hydrate and heal your dry skin. Luckily it is easy to access aloe here, and then after that has been absorbed, I rub on some coconut oil.

It should be understood that the FDA and USDA do not regulate skincare products. So its a unregulated until proven harmful industry. This is why lead is used in the cosmetics industry for so long. That said, the ingredients that you need to avoid at all costs are Papa, Parabens, Phthalates, Oxybenzone, Avobenzone & Dioxin. The tools I use to source healthy products in general are: Good Guide is an excellent source for skincare, food, and cleaners. I was using a shampoo from Europe where it had chemicals baned in the EU yet leagal in the US and it was a know carcinogenic. It can rank, for example shampoo, from healthiest to least healthy. It can tell you the good the bad and the ugly in the products you already use. If your product is not listed, but concerned about a particular ingredient, you can also look up the ingredient. EWG is serious about toxins. Like the lables "NON-GMO Verified" or "USDA Organic" EWG has a "EWG Verified" and lists and ranks products based on the health vs toxins too. Their focus is skincare, Cosmetics but they are also branching out in to Water, Consumer Products and Food. You can search in Amazon for "EWG Verified Sunscreens". They also have a phone app. And this is the EWG Database http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/#.WrQSN8gh3jg To get into the real science of toxins in sunscreens, GreenMEDinfo is the place to go. They do more than sunscreens, but the link is specific to sunscreens. http://www.greenmedinfo.com/toxic-ingredient/sunscreen From a nutrition perspective, which is my focus, one of the best resource sites is Nutritionfacts.org where they have a video on how antioxidan rich foods can bolster skin protection and reduce sun burn by 40%. https://nutritionfacts.org/video/preventing-skin-cancer-from-the-inside-out/ If you have never seen Dr. Greggers How Not To Die annual presenations listing the top 15 premature causes of death, its funny and quite informative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXXXygDRyBU&index=2&list=WL&t=0s Last is Cosmeticsinfo.org who is dedicated to exposing toxins in skin care. They are famous for the tab "What's in My Products?" search engine. Here is a simple search on sunscreen: http://www.cosmeticsinfo.org/search/node/sunscreen
