Hey everyone, I'm sure most people on here have a story of near death while surfing on a big day! It's never a comfortable feeling when you air drop 10ft+ only to be held under by several waves! Your heart is racing and you would give anything to get back to the surface! I've certainly had situations like this surfing all around the world, but it was not until I nearly drowned on a huge day in South Africa before I realized NOT training was NOT an option. After that, I started freediving and worked until I could hold my breath for 5min and dive to -160ft. I want to help you understand the principles of freediving and how the relate to surfing! For this reason, I'm offering Heavy Wave Survival Training! This is a 1 day course that covers: - Basic Anatomy and Physiology of Freediving - Stress management for the emergency breath hold - Pre/post breathing techniques for breath hold activities - How to train for your maximum breath hold attempt - Safety/Rescue for hypoxic incidents - Training drills to simulate rough surf, large sets, etc. Instagram @morgan.cooney Phone: 321.505.3949 |

I think the most important thing, in FL waves anyway, is to just not panic and realize that it's not going to last very long.

Yes WG, and for any dangerous, life threatening situation in any type of water scenario: 1st Rule- Dont Panic!!! If you do, you lose half your breath and on tap energy and begin to make poor decisions!! It is quite rare in a drowning situation the adrenaline/endorphins help save you!!! ------------------------- Tubes, Boobs, & Doobs!!! |

Yes, that is 100% true! Although, hurricane swell or foreign waves may make you forget logic if you haven't trained previously! This course is designed to show students that the urge to breathe is still a long way from hypoxic blackout and thus give a greater confidence and competance when out in larger surf |

Yes, relaxation is the most important factor and I have found that counting slowly while in a hold down works wonders in relaxation. It is amazing how fast you think time goes, but, if you count you realize that you have only been down a fraction of what you know you can do. I was in a breath holding "contest" last time I was in El Sal and the first guy came up saying that he thought he had been down 40 seconds. I had been counting and knew he had only been down 15 seconds. I kept on counting and stayed down 2 min 15 sec and when I surfaced I felt like I could have been down another minute. I only "train" infrequently and it helps, but, knowing how long I can hold my breath AND knowing how long I have been down helps a lot in relaxing.

Always important. And I have never had anything but some uncomfortable moments in Fl. But most of us travel. A sizable day at, say, Blacks is a whole different ball game. I'd be interested in the course. Let us know when and where. ------------------------- I :heart; Q |

To judge from Instagram, he's perhaps been up on the Washington coast. Would recommend "Beneath Cold Seas: The Underwater Wilderness of the Pacific Northwest" Photos by David Hall. A joint Canada/US (UW Press) book. The Costco in Portland would host a dive shop in winter. That's when Puget Sound and other areas have clear water. Also freshwater kayak season. |
