The Inertia has the info.  I'm sure others were doing good surf and motorcycling filming at the time, but I'm impressed at what he was able to do when color film was slow, figuring out exposures took a hand-held meter, focus was manual, there wasn't the mass of outdoor and water equipment we have today (although there was lots of interest in water photography) and of course film was expensive and a small operator like Brown didn't have a studio lab to do quick processing.

And Brown was daring and creative about selling his work.

I rented The Endless Summer from Blockbuster when I was in 11th grade (1991), living in Greenville, SC. I knew right then and there that I would find a way to surf one day. As luck would have it, we moved to Pensacola that very year, and I had a board within a couple of months. Of course, I broke it and almost drowned from Andrew, but I was on my way. The Endless Summer is still my favorite surf film to this day.

So bummed to hear about this news. When I got into surfing in middle school, I would watch The Endless Summer almost every Friday night before Saturday morning dawn patrols with my dad. That film transcends surfing and remains an incredible piece of cinema. And you can't beat his narration in any of his classic films. God speed, Bruce. Catch some of those Cape St. Francis peelers up there in the afterlife...

I'm pretty sure I wore out the VHS of Endless Summer II.

I'd always hoped there would be an Endless Summer III.

He made a lasting mark on the world when young and lived a long life.
Don't be bummed.
Celebrate his life.
Pop in that old VHS tape and enjoy it!

He brought surfing to the non-surfing public, a person didn't have to be a surfer to enjoy his movies, RIP.

Brown must have taken good care of his negatives.  DVD versions of his movies look fine.

Endless Summer II was likable, though part of my memory was the thunderstorm that left the parking lot near the movie theater dry while soaking the other side.  In recent years, an Endless Winter would have been the thing, with someone like Chris Burkard doing the circuit from Ireland to Iceland to Portugal, then after a break to all the southern hemisphere swell spots, ending in South Africa or maybe Chile, Margaret River, or South Island.

BTW, spotted a $1,300 or so fare, Orlando to Perth, August 2018.

Great guy , may he rest well . Loved that he and others at the time would travel with the movie as it played up and down the coast to promote it . loved meeting all those different producers back in the day , fond memories indeed .

My favorite quote from that movie was that the bathing suits (i.e. bikini) could fit in a band aid box.
Great movie, great narration, definitely got me stoked on surfing as a 6 year old.

It was the movie we watched when we had a free day in school

All my teachers loved the movie so when I offered to bring it in
They all said yes... That happened from 13 years of age and on

I am going to sit and watch endless summer when I get back into town Friday

He lead a long, full, rich life on his own terms .... doing what he loved.
May we all be as fortunate.

The genesis of my surf travel addiction and creation of a mindset: The Endless Summer. RIP: Legend.

So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off.
