I posted this link into a different topic. Thought it was interesting, so now it has it's own post. I hope the link works. Bahamas Another video, considering using crushed glass to replace sand NBC

but very very little of it is actually suitable to be a "replacement" for beach sand.

When I was in town visiting this summer, I noticed the sea turtles in melbourne beach were laying their eggs really high up in the dunes, like in the sea oats. One of the turtle people on ATV's told me that it's because the sand brought in from the middle of the state is too compact for the turtles to dig holes in and would be impossible for the hatchlings to dig out. Like concrete. Not sure why they don't just dredge and pump sand from offshore. Keep it natural.

Beaches naturally change. To fight that change is a losing battle and a complete waste of money. The best solution to beach erosion is less development along the immediate coast. Seawalls only make things worse.

a lotta folks keep expecting that to change (or for it to make sense) , but it doesn't and won't any time soon. Why?After they finish lining their pockets -  they gotta spend thesurplus tax money somewhere, and what better way than tryna fight mama nature?

Discuss,

The sand they "replenish" with is like dirt and is a waste of tax dollars. Ahh if only we could have that squeaky  Daytona Smyrna sand.. A man can dream

Maybe a sand slurry pipeline from the Lake Wales Ridge?

Indian River County is looking at a big sand mine.

let me make sure I understand what you are suggesting ........ a 75-100 mile long "slurry pipeline" that would transverse a LOT of VERY sensitive wetlands and conservation areas ????

Ummmm, , , , the simple answer is that we DO NOT NEED more sand, perhaps less condos?

There are nature documentaries focused on the coast of GA. A lot of barrier islands that are owned by the state or private land owners who refuse to sell. The coast is a fantastic location for migrating birds, sea turtles, etc and a lot of discussion about how the islands get smaller on one section while continuing to expand in other sections due to forces of nature. FL's development doesn't allow the beaches to expand naturally. I wonder how much longer some of the beaches can survive.
